The new season is almost upon us, and kicks off in Australia on March 29th. Who will be this year's winners and losers?
Can Lewis do the double, or will Alonso find the extra speed in the Renault to compete? Will Vettel develop the talent we saw he's capable of in the closing races of 2008? Will Webber be fit to race after his cycling accident before Christmas? Will Honda find a buyer, or will Button be forced to retire? Will Kimi get his passion back, or will he let Massa take the lead? And how will the rookies fare? I guess we'll have to get up very early to find out. Any predictions?

Can you post the link for the thread this one refers to Hey Hatcham, I've never said I don't make typing mistakes - I make plenty. So I don't point out, for instance, yours. Only Subedei's - and that's because he thinks he never makes mistakes. Which, of course, he does. Just like the rest of us. Meanwhile, I'm off to start a thread which mentions "depened". ;D ;D

Could we be about to see a battle of the Brits? Ross Brawn's team have somehow leapt from obscurity to front-runners since the Brit took over the old Honda outfit.
They seem to be making the Mercedes engines work better than McLaren themselves, who are struggling for pace, and opted not to test today in a session that saw Barrichello fastest and Alonso crash.
Even Ferrari aren't able to match Brawn GPs pace. So could we see Button emerge from the shadows and take on Hamilton?

Worried expressions in the McLaren camp in the run-up to this race . Seems their car is a bit of a Robin Reliant compared to some .

It would be nice to see, although I think it's expecting a little too much for Brawn GP to challenge for the title in the first year, it will take time to build up the necessary reliability, etc. However, it would be excellent for F1 to have another team up there challenging for wins. What a bloke Englishman Ross Brawn is - he's been in charge of F1 team for two seconds and already transformed their fortunes.

The Brawn GP performance may have been a bit of PR stunt, running light with extra sticky tyres in order to impress sponsors. The ultimate proof will be running consistently over a race weekend in full racing trim, and carrying a full fuel load.

True, but this wasn't based on just one test - it's been opinions from various people inside the sport for the last few weeks or so. And don't underestimate Renault either. But the latest news is that this year's world champion will be decided on race wins, not points: news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7948455.stm

Obviously i am a real novice when it comes to F1, but i am amazed that Jensen Button is 5/2 favourite to win the Aussie GP.

Looks like the bookies have been reading the websites, but as Wibbs says, these practise sessions are often used for testing, so can be a bit "skewy". Would be interesting to know if the odds on his team mate, Barrichello, are longer? And it may just be worth a punt on Vettel or Alonso. Although if I were a betting lady I'd be waiting until after Australia to place mine!

Yes, sorry, I meant I wouldn't be betting on race winners until I'd seen how they perform in race conditions.
And I still wouldn't rule out Ferrari.

So the season is almost upon us and already four teams are protesting about the diffusers used by Toyota, Brawn GP and Williams, although they have been cleared to race by the FIA. Ferrari, BMW, Renault and Red Bull are the four teams who have asked for clarification over the rules.
Elsewhere, Lewis Hamilton has backtracked on his quote:
"I haven't had offers from other teams and I'm not talking to with anyone, but I would listen to an offer from another team if someone asked me. It would be a great compliment and it would be silly if I did not."
He has insisted he is fully committed to the Woking team.
And, finally, Raikkonen has been told to buck up his ideas this year, and Ferrari have changed him to the number 4 driver, with Massa at 3.
The first race of the season starts on Sunday at 7am on BBC 1.
