The Pirates had an up and down sort of season in 2007 - they started well and looked good for much of the season and then things went wrong. But at least they made the play-offs, after missing out in 2005 and 2006, which is progress. And they've signalled their intent to improve further in 2008 by making a couple of early signings for the new season in Karol Zabik and Chris Holder. They're likely to be joined by Jason Crump, which will surely mean there's no room at Wimborne Road for Bjarne Pedersen. The future of Edward Kennett also seems uncertain, with a rumoured move to parent club Eastbourne likely, although if he's wanted by the Pirates, they could use their asset and Eastbourne favourite Davey Watt as leverage. But do they want him? He impressed early doors, but then drifted away and is fairly hopeless on the bigger tracks. Troy Batchelor will surely be retained, but I'm not so sure about his fellow countryman Jason Doyle. And what about late season recruit Adrain Gomolski? It's possible the Pirates will retain his services, although I fancy it unlikely. Depending on the BSPA AGM, I suppose it's possible that Poole will be able to fit Krzysztof Kasprzak in their line-up, which would give the Pirates a very formidable looking team. We'll have to wait and see, but this is a thread to discuss the facts and rumours surrounding the Poole 2008 team.

Your comment on the Lakeside thread about continuity is relevant in that this is something that Poole have not had in the last few years, in the pursuit of winning, Matt Ford has chopped and changed his lineups and IMO stopped his side in it's tracks . Even this year, OK he has signed the 2 boy wonders, but last year he had Troy, Jason,Eddie with Bjarne and Crumpie, surely this year that team would do so much better, but no the hairdresser changes the lineup and personel AGAIN. Will be interesting to see who gets the chop and who is given a chance again in 2008, this is what Bjarne thinks: www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/sport/topsport/display.var.1783972.0.bjarne_2008_place_is_out_of_my_hands.php

Poole actually tried for continuity in 2005, famously retaining the whole of their top five from 2004, but it didn't work.

Well the Primates 2008 won't include Boxer Boycey as he has now officially announced his retirement, taken from the Poole Forum:
Poole Pirates speedway legend Craig Boyce has announced his immediate retirement from the sport after an astonishing twenty year career that took him to the top-most rungs of the world speedway ladder. Boyce made his debut for Poole in 1988, since when he has led them to three league championship successes and gone on to become the Club’s all time highest point scorer. “ It’s not been an easy decision for me to make” he said “ but I feel that the time is right for me to step down. I struggled a little bit toward the end of last season and that started me thinking that maybe it was the right thing to do.” “ I’ve been lucky to enjoy such a great career, and achieved most of the things that I wanted to do during my time on the track. But like they say, all good things come to an end and I guess even I can’t beat that one.” A three times winner of the Australian Individual Championship, Boyce finished third in the FIM World Individual Championship in 1994 and also helped Australia to win the FIM Speedway World Cup in 2001 and 2002. Boyce started racing speedway in Australia during the late 1980’s where he caught the eye of the then Australian team manager Neil Street who recommended him to the Poole club during the winter of 1987. The Dorset club invited Boyce to come to this country for a trial and were so impressed that he was offered a full contract for the 1988 season. He quickly established himself as a regular in the Pirates side and helped the club to win the National League championship in 1989 and a National League and Knock Out Cup championship double in 1990. He was also captain of the Poole side that won the Division One title in 1994. The new millennium saw Boyce endure a four year loan period away from the club before returning to Poole in 2003 to lead the Pirates to success in the British League Cup. The 2007 season saw his average dip to just below six points per match but he was still capable of turning on the style from time to time as he showed in his not – to – be – forgotten races with 2007 world champion Nicki Pedersen.Boyce is expected to remain in the role as Australian Team Manager.
As always it is sad to see a rider retire, even if he is a Primate legend but still all the best to Boycey and please may you continue doing the excellent job you do of tuning engines, especially Davey Watt's!
One thing about the article though, why does everything that comes from Poole have to include some sort of spin? The sentence I have highlighted, from what I remember of the season, isn't true. The only "not to be forgotten" race with Nicki I can remember was in the first meeting of the season when Boyce fenced Nicki and then promptly thumped him. The rest of the races between the 2, Nicki won without any trouble from Boyce, especially as it was Crump who came second in them. This isn't a dig at Boyce and may just be me being pathetic but I'm tired and this has annoyed me.

Welcome to the club Mimi - the Action Against Poole's Incessant Spin Society - or AA PISS for short. I have a few good friends darn in Darzet, and they readily admit that the spin/bullshit which eminates from the club, really does them no favours at all. Poole are a well run club, they have a good fanbase but are constantly let down by a few dickheads on the BSF and many of their press releases........let's all join together and take 'AA PISS'. ;D And interestingly, in their PR they omitted to mention they sacked Boycey in the final stages of the season!!!

And the chances of Davey Watt joining Bjarne at the top have just become pretty good with the news that Eastbourne can no longer fit him in.

Reckon Watt must be a nailed on certainty now tbh. Interesting four riders so far if that is the case, just need to make sure our 3 pointer we'll end up with at reserve is proven and not a wobbler. Still have a sneaky suspicion Matt has something up his sleeve... Edited 5 hours later...OK so now it's being denied that Watt has spoken to Poole. I give up. not a clue. This worse that waiting for bleedin' Christmas

Are you Darren Cook in disguise? As for Skornicki what a laugh. Someone sees a guy who looks a bit like him in a Poole car park and all of a sudden we're signing him? Hysterical ;D

Matt Ford appears to have lost a few marbles. Skornicki? What's that all about? The Weirdity's a better rider than Skornicki.
