From the Bournemouth Echo:
PIRATES newcomer Kyle Legault says he was never going to allow his 2008 injury horror show to stop him achieving his top flight dream.
The Canadian suffered a terrible start to last season when he broke his thigh while riding for Premier League Birmingham against Rye House on April 2.
This injury could have sidelined the 23-year-old for 18 months but Legault made a miraculous comeback within three.
His return was short-lived, though, as he was cleaned out in an horrific three-man pile-up with Ben Wilson and Andre Compton at Sheffield on August 21, which left him with a broken jaw.
That was enough to curtail a rough season for Legault, which saw him spend around four months out of action.
But the Sheffield asset has no intention of letting a couple of injuries slow his career down.
Speaking from his home in Ontario, he said: “I had a really bad season last year but I’m still able to compete at my level and the crashes haven’t brought me down at all.
“I sat down last year and made a five-year plan for my speedway.
“Last season I wanted to step my programme up in the Premier so that I could get my bikes and equipment up to Elite League standard.
“That was my goal but unfortunately I didn’t manage to achieve this due to the injuries.
“I’ve made a bit of a gamble but in my plan I always wanted to move up to the Elite this year.
“I’m sure that if I had another year in the Premier, I would be taking a step back.”
Instead of making the circa 550-mile round trip to Poole and back from his British base near Sheffield, Legault is moving his operation to Dorset.
But it is not just the weather which attracted the Canadian to head due south.
He added: “I’ve been based in the north of England so far and the weather isn’t fantastic up there.
“So I’m moving down to Poole from Sheffield – that’s probably the biggest change for me this season.
“But I’m sure it’ll work out because this club has a lot of success behind it.
“It’s great to be a part of it and I’ll help us push to regain the title next year.”
Before Legault joins up with Poole Castle Cover, he is leaving his snow-covered home to race in sunny Argentina along with Stoke’s Lee Complin.
The Poole reserve hopes this will give him the track time he needs to regain his sharpness after sitting out so much of 2008.
He added: “I made the decision halfway through last season to go to Argentina this winter and ride.
“It was all done through Armando Castanga – he spoke to me when I was in Italy for the GP Qualifier and asked me if I’d ride in the International Championship.
“As of now there are 10 actual championship rounds but there are several other meetings out there that I’m going to get myself entered into.
“I should be riding for seven weeks so I’m looking forward to that.”
