Football is so popular because the fans can get behind their team......footballers move on, but the team is always there. F1 is so popular because it has high speeds, sensational crashes and once had overtaking. Speedway has all the criteria above so should be massive....the reason it isn't is because of a) some of the rules, and b) the fact that the 'administrators' don't want it to get too big because they would then lose control. Think about it.......some administrators do make an awful lot of money from speedway!!

They do, but unfortunately full squad systems are unrealistic - there's no way British clubs could afford them. How? Y'da still being paying out for the 7 riders depending how which 7 you chose. The lower you down in the quality of rider, the nearer to nil the signing-on fee is. Harry - but riders still want the same income over the season, so use them for half th meetings, and they'll want double the wages. As you can tell, I strongly dislike the use of guests. But British Speedway is in such a state, they are needed for decimated teams, because full squads are not a realistic financial option. BUT I'd like to see guests only when a club is missing two heat leaders. And that wouldn't be very often at all.

BUT if Lewis Hamilton gets injured, can Kimi Raikkonen drive for McLaren for a couple of races. Of course he can't. What on earth has that got to do with anything? Can I assume you've just lost the argument and are now rambling incoherently?

A few years ago Real Madrid were knocked out of europe by a goal from Morientes(their own player) who was guesting for Marseilles. What sport other than Cricket had an LBW rule ? etc, etc, etc Schumi is right, sports like football are popular because two kids and a tennis ball can have a game, F1(which seems to have more ludicrous rules than all other sports put together) is popular, because many people are obsessed with fast cars. But many people are also obessed by bikes. Speedway CAN be popular. It HAS been popular. Wembley used to have crowds of 60,000+ every week. The reason it's not longer popular is because it's bloody Mickey Mouse. Guests are an abhorrance, so is the tactical bloody ride. Hatcham - you CAN'T have guests in Football. Please come up with another sport which actually uses guests. But you can have loan deals Genghis, so players can and do turn up at the same ground wearing different shirts and playing for different teams on a regular basis. I have taken many people to speedway, and a lot of them have quite enjoyed themselves, but not enough to travel 100-150 mile round trip to watch it on a regular basis. As for the joke rules, its only us who know the sport who hate them, new attendees will in all sports take the rules on face value, as in, if you take someone to speedway and say "see Leigh Adams, in the Poole kevlars, he doesn't actually ride for Poole he is a Swindon rider guesting for them for tonight only, i think its a stupid rule, dont you agree" they are likely to say yes, but very very VERY unlikely to have come to that conclusion un-prompted.

I don't go along with this participation thing at all, there's loads of sports which are popular which you can't go out and do yourself. And as recent as the 70s, speedway has been popular. So saying it can't be popular is nonsense - it clearly can be. If only there were more promoters about like Stuart Douglas, Rob Godfrey or the Chapmans.

[Can I assume you've just lost the argument and are now rambling incoherently? I ramble incoherently anyway, even in cases when I've won the argument, such as this one. Schumi, it's nonsense to say that Speedway can not be popular. If so why can I remember standing in packed stadiums in the days when I was a young lad.

Sorry, I had to go eat some tasty Indian food and watch some crap TV. IF a guest system has to be in place, I think it should be used as sparingly as possible. Having MORE guest appearances would only make things look more ridiculous. Anything that reduces the number of guest appearances is good in my book, so I could never support a relaxation of the rules. I don't think I'd look good as a sailor, BTW.

Lynchings and hangings were also popular once Genghis, and how is Kev singing from the same sheet as you ? your imagination(such as it is) is running amok again, i bet in your head Kev is in a sailor suit singing the winner takes it all.

What constitutes a genuine reason ?
