From http://www.speedwayworld.tv:
ADAM Shields says he is bang on-schedule to make a successful track return after serious injury last year. The experienced Australian suffered back and rib injuries in a heavy crash at Peterborough last August, and was unable to play any part in Lakeside's battle for Elite League honours, as well as missing out his racing for Leszno and Rospiggarna. But he has been named in the Hammers' team once again this year as captain and says there will be no long-lasting effects from the crash. Shields said: "I've often played down how fit you need to be to ride speedway, but it's when you take a knock and recover that you realise how high your fitness levels are, and that's helped me recover quickly. "I've been working hard and I fully intend to be 100 per cent fit for the start of the season. "I have no psychological after-effects from the crash, it just happened because I made an error. All riders make mistakes and I paid for the one I made. "I've been training hard and increasing my work rate, and the good news is that my gym trainer is also training alongside me, which helps. "I'm anticipating being back to peak fitness by the start of the season and looking forward to 2009 being my best yet in speedway."

From http://www.speedwayworld.tv:
KAUKO Nieminen will make his full-time Elite Leage debut in 2009 - and the Finn is confident of his chances with Lakeside. Nieminen first lined up for the Hammers in the second half of last season, joining the club as No.8 and making several impressive appearances whilst also enjoying a strong season with Workington in the Premier League. But his season came to an abrupt halt when he crashed during Lakeside's play-off semi-final win over Swindon and suffered a broken collarbone, finishing the campaign on the Hammers' lengthy injury list. However, he had already done enough to put himself firmly in Lakeside's plans for 2009, and they confirmed his signing early in the winter. Nieminen said: "The injury gave me time to reflect and I made up my mind that if Lakeside came calling, I would make the leap and go full time Elite League. "I had a great time with Workington in the Premier League, and have made many friends, but I know I can rise to the new challenge. "I've been up in Lapland doing some cross country skiing, and playing ice-hockey, and back home I've been out on the enduro bike in addition to a lot of gym work. I feel really fit, physically and mentally, and I just can't wait for the season to start."

Lakeside look really poor to me this year and i can see them at the bottom with Eastbourne. Good news about Shields, but he's coming back from a very nasty injury indeed so it remains to be seen how well he will return. Kylmakorpi is a complete waste of time. Every single winter we hear the same old stuff about Kylmakorpi being on a false average and he's really 8 or 9 point rider waiting to happen. We're still waiting. This lad can get injured brushing his teeth in the morning which is a shame. Is there a single Lakeside fan out there confident that he'll see out the season this time without getting injured?? Reserves are really poor too. I don't agree with what some are saying regarding Robson being a trump card. To be fair this is mostly coming from Coventry fans who blindly think he's the same rider who averaged around 6 when he rode for them years ago Robson didn't fancy the premier because of the lack of an air fence. I'm sorry but when a rider starts thinking about getting through 4 laps in one piece before winning the race is the time to get out. The same happened to Shawn Moran during his last couple of years. Looked a shadow of the rider he was and admitted the fear of crashing and getting injured was on his mind when coming to the tapes in his races rather than winning them.

I tend to agree, i can see west ham towards the basement along with the tractor boys, but Seattle are going to be miles adrift at the bottom.

The only thing you can say though is that all 3 clubs could make changes later in the season. Eastie should have points to play with, Lakeside have shown under the new promotion that they are not afraid to change things around mid-season if things are not going to plan. Ippo are not known for making changes, but Loram is expected to get the all clear early doors and should have a chunk shaven off his 2006 average. I could see Loram coming in for a fed up Hampel later in the season and spare points to bring in Miskowiak for a misfiring Lanham or Stachyra.

I've no doubt the Seahawks will have plenty of points to play with but who are they likely to get other than Scott Nicholls, who will realize that despite being shafted by British speedway, cutting off his nose was not the way to go.
