There are no doubt problems with some clubs in the PL, Mildenhall & Redcar's problems have been made public. However, it does seem a more stable & viable structure than the EL. Just thinking back from the end of the 2006 season there's been one hell of a turnover of promoters in the EL Lakeside - Russell sold to Douglas Belle Vue - Mole sold to Gordon/Pairman/Morton Eastbourne - Brimson sold to Hagon Reading - BSI sold to Legg Coventry - Sandhu sold to Trump Oxford - Lanney sold to Horton Peterborough - Horton sold to Frost 5 out of the 7 changes of Promotion at these clubs were due to financial issues and another due to the previous promoter becoming disillusioned with the way the EL was being run. Only Belle Vue changed hands in circumstance that weren't really forced. Of those 5 one has since folded, one dropped down to the PL and applications to join the PL were made from at least another 1. Just 4 clubs out of the 11 who started the 2007 EL have managed to retain the same promotion, and it's rumoured that only 2 of them make a profit. Is it any wonder PL promoters don't feel inspired to ride at higher level which is likely to end in disaster. The money isn't there in British speedway anymore, yet many EL promoters continue to splash it around. EL speedway can't compete financially with Poland, Sweden or Russia and until they accept that & start to cut their cloth accordingly or bite the bullet & get rid of GP stars the EL won't get anywhere near equal numbers of teams to that the PL boasts. Personally, I can see things getting worse in the EL before they get any better. Taking your list as a point, I have to say that is thanks to the 2 promoters who came and have now gone, that many of today's problems in the EL can be laid at their door. John Posselthwaite(sp!) and Colin Horton bought their Play off final teams in 2006, and i) bankrupted themselves and ii) have left a precedent that the majority of long term promoters can't sustain, that being unnecessary high wages for the riders in the EL. Well obviously Fatt Mord and Orange Terry can, and Sandhu if he gets over his hissy fit can too, but the rest have to cut their cloth accordingly, and new boy Stanley of Lakeside, is too shrewd to chuck money willy nilly, but appears to have been able to run the club successfully since taking over from the joke that is RR. So we are left with a legacy set by a couple of plonkers who put personal glory ahead of the long term future of speedway as a whole. What to do???, I haven't a clue, but until the PL and EL get closer together in terms of running costs and race nights etc, as you say the EL will flounder and die, and the PL will then inherit the problems of the EL because they become the top division. The problems will never go away whilst the old boys club stays in charge, as self interest will always override what is good for the sport, and who you are is much more important than any rules etc., adhered to by the rest of the clubs. sorry bit of a rant I know, but I feel quite strongly about the indiscretions of several promoters in speedway

It certainly will Hatcham, but I'd expect to see a breakaway league formed outside of the BSPA regulations before that happens. Would going back to grass roots speedway be so bad? It's 4 blokes on bikes, does it matter who they are or what country they come from as long as they provide good racing & entertainment? Very true but if i was a promoter and by dropping from the elite to the premier my outgoings (wage bill) dropped significantly and my income (attendances) remained fairly much the same, i would now be considering dropping into the conference

Would going back to grass roots speedway be so bad? Do we have 'grass roots' in this country to go back to ? i wonder how many 13-18 year olds there are in this country training and hoping for a career in speedway, i would be surprised if the figure was anywhere near 500.

Badges response is very valid & very true. Posslethwaite & Horton engineered their own demise with their bouncing cheque book speedway, but other promotions don't have to follow like lemmings.
Realistically, nothing is going to change with the current the make up/running of the EL unless Russell or Ford want it to.

I wonder if posslethwaite's biggest problem wasn't underestimating the passion many speedway supporters have for their team, i have to admit until i first joined the bsf i had no idea and that was only 2 or 3 years ago and i have been following the sport all my life

Posslethwaite's problem was his arrogance. He believe he could just field a good team (and credit to him the 2006 was a bloody good team) and that would be enough to turn the clubs fortunes around. Changing the clubs name & constantly changing the clubs race night didn't help, but nobody in the local area who wasn't already a speedway fan had a scooby who Reading Bulldogs were. For someone who built their career on commercial & marketing corner stones he really should have know better. He seemed hell bent on pissing off & distancing himself from as many supporters as he could, whilst his successors haven't had the same sort of comparative budget or been able to field a superstar team, but have engaged the supporters and seen crowd levels grow despite some poor on track performances from the team. Horton, well his numerous problems have played out for all to see. I guess what I'm trying to say is that far too many promoters in the sport have their heads up their arses & couldn't give a shit what fans really want, but we all know this anyway don't we!

Whilst we go to the title chase for the top four teams, there is still a fight going on to avoid the relegation play-offs. Tonight's meeting between Belle Vue and Coventry will decide who joins Wolverhampton in that battle - if Belle Vue win, then Peterborough will be that team.

Well old Lord Flapperjack himself did always say the Panthers would be in the play-offs at the end of the season. Be a change for one of his promises to actually come true. ;D
