Here you go chaps. As there are a few who seem to want to talk about it, then it shall be so.
And as we can talk freely I'll give my thoughts, for what they're worth.
At the beginning of this investigation all we knew was that a little girl had gone missing. As a parent, if that had been my child, I would have been in bits - I know I would. But the parents in this case dealt with their grief differently. Some might say they were cold, maybe not admitting their fears in case they came true, perhaps not wanting to deal with the enormity of the situation? I don't know.
Then we had the delay with releasing information about what Maddy had been wearing. Now, I can think of absolutely no reason for that.
I'm not sure what was to be gained from the visit to the Pope - if it were me I'd have wanted to be in Portugal, and I'd have had my other children glued to my side.
But there is a suspect, though I haven't heard much about him. The police investigation seems to have stalled and now it's hard to know if this will ever be solved, or if poor Maddy will ever be found. Maybe if things had been dealt with quicker there might have been results by now? I can't help but feel if more effort had been made in getting statements, giving information quickly, and following up leads there might have been some sort of news by now.

This has been probably the strangest , most fucked up missing child case ever . I'm like you Schumi , i shudder to think what i'd be like if anything like this had happened with any of my kids . There is a lot of rumour and speculation about what happened to Madeline . And the police have a lot to answer for . Being a parent myself my heart went out to the McCanns , but why turn it into a circus - jetting off here , there and everywhere in private jets and doing interview after interview . And if you'd just lost a child could you jet all over the place and leave your other kids behind - sorry but no . My own feeling is that Madeline died that night . As to who is responsible well i think that will come out in time - despite the incompetance of the local police .

I'm reading that nodding like Churchill (the dog, not the man) but then I'm in a very strange mood today.
But on the other hand I don't want to condemn these parents because that's what everyone else seems to be doing, and, God forbid, if I were ever in a situation like that and I were innocent, I think I'd be needing all the support I could get.

I'm not condemning the parents Schumi . They've lost a child and now are being accused of killing that child . If they are innocent , and i really hope they are , they must be at their wits end . But a child is lost and nobody knows whether she is alive or dead , well nearly nobody . The Portuguese police's incompetance shows no sign of abating as they stumble through this investigation with a flair Peter Sellers would have had a job of acting . I just hope it isn't the McCanns that are guilty after travelling the world in private jets looking for their missing daughter . Cause to go through that charade knowing their daughter was dead - well it doesn't bear thinking about .

I'm not condemning the parents Schumi . No, I know you're not, Paul, and I hoped you wouldn't take it that way. Like I said, I agree with everything you've said. In particular I was referring to the comment on the BSF about arresting the parents for murder, and the subsequent bashing I've seen there.

To be honest Stuart - i dont know what to make of the whole thing . Bottom line is - a wee defenceless girl is missing and now i fear she is dead . Despite the local police being total incompetant fuckwits , they must get this right . And the correct person or persons responsible for this crime must face charges .

I haven't really taken much notice of this case, to be honest. But what strikes is that everyone who knows the family comes on the radio and television saying that anyone who knew the parents would know they couldn't harm the children they doted on. But didn't they leave the children alone while they went out for a meal?

But didn't they leave the children alone while they went out for a meal? And that's the part that shall be forever on their conscience . I've been abroad when my kids were little , and when we went out to eat they were with us . If i went into the bar at the hotel or apartments they were with us . It's not like eating in the garden at home with the kids in the house . It's a foreign country - you don't wander away and leave weans unattended in a foreign country.

No, to me that's the indefensible bit. The story goes that the children were too tired to go with them to eat. Well in that case I'd have got a takeaway.

It's alienated me big time.

The whole weird effect is because Portuguese law sensibly prevents any confirmation of any aspect of the case under investigation, no press releases and no statements - UK police have been trying to extract as much as they can and the press are freewheeling into insanity. Our police soon feed and make public appeals and have huge press relations staff. They don't.
I bet - after a trial - the actual sequence of events and the police decision will seem far more rational.

I really don't know what to think, other than both parents are guilty of neglect. All parents have a duty of care to their children, which includes making sure they are safe, especially when they are of tender years. The McCanns did not carry out their duty, FACT. They thought their own pleasure, i.e. grown ups having dinner in a restaurant was more important. That's not my way, if you have children you look after them 24/7.
As for the latest developments, I think the media are making too much of it, to be honest. Portuguese law is patently not the same as British law, and if they wish to ask the parents certain questions, as I understand it they have to name them as suspects. I assume that does not necessarily mean they are guilty of abduction or murder, maybe just of neglect which necessitates asking these questions.
As for their actions since their daughter disappeared, well no one knows how they will react in such circumstances, all I know is I have had an uneasy feeling since the start, no more than that tho. I can't get my head round their flying here there and everywhere. It may just be their way of coping, but it's my belief they should have stayed with their other two children, who young as they are must have noticed their sister wasn't around, and then their parents go missing periodically.

SL - you have summed the whole thing up for me - thanks for saving me the job! As I said on the BullShit Forum... Leaving 3 kids under the age of 4 in an unlocked apartment while you go out to dinner with your mates is NOT the same thing as having your kid wander off in the supermarket. I agree that it will live with them for the rest of their lives but let me ask you and all the parents out there one thing - if this had happened to your child what would you do with your other 2 kids... a) Never let them out of your sight b ) Make sure they are close by at all times c) Leave them in the creche while you go to the gym/go to visit the Pope/bu**er off to America?
