COVENTRY Bees are delighted to announce that they have reached an agreement for the future ownership of the club after considering several options including running in the Premier League after recent proposals at the BSPA.
The priority for Avtar Sandhu after making the decision to sell the club was not a financial one; rather, it was to find the right person to take on the responsibilities, grow the club and to protect speedway at Coventry Stadium going into the future. All at the club hope that the forthcoming BSPA AGM results in decisions which enable the sport to go forward.
The Coventry Bees are now under the control of West Country businessman Allen Trump, who will lease the team for the 2008 season with an option to purchase at the end of 2008.
As part of the deal, Colin Pratt and all the existing back-of-house personnel will transfer and continue to undertake the running of the club for Allen. The deal has been structured in this way to ensure maximum continuity for the club whilst giving Allen a whole season to establish himself before making the final purchase.
Sandhu commented after the deal was done: "I intend to stay loyal to the club as a supporter, and will continue to help riders behind the scenes in the same way that I have always done.
"I am passionate about the club, and I want more than anything for the club to continue to grow and reward its loyal fans with more silverware whilst remaining in the Elite League. This deal enables this to happen.
"I am sad to be leaving the club after the many highs and even the few lows of recent years, but I am confident that Allen is the right man to take the club forward with new ideas and vision for the future.
"I will continue to be involved as a supporter and will continue to ensure the best interests of the club are maintained in any way that I can. I would like to thank the supporters, riders, officials, Colin and Peter (Oakes) for making my time as owner an absolute pleasure, and something I will treasure for years to come. In addition, all of our sponsors have offered tremendous support and my sincere thanks go to John Clarke and Steve Thompstone at Buildbase."
Allen Trump said: "In my opinion, Coventry is the Manchester United of speedway, and over the last three years it has become the very best club in the sport in all aspects. I am very proud to be able to take over.
"I would like to pay full tribute to Mr Sandhu for putting Coventry at the top of the speedway tree. He has set new standards in the sport which everyone else should be seeking to attain. I would assure all Coventry supporters that I am very keen to keep us right at the top of the Elite League.
"I am very pleased and grateful to have inherited such a strong infrastructure of staff, and it is my intention to build on the work that has been done in recent years."
Allen Trump will become a co-promoter of the club and will accompany Colin Pratt to the BSPA AGM which begins next Thursday. We would also point out that the arrangements at the club for stock car racing remain unchanged as a result of this transfer of speedway ownership.
