A lot of fans would have been glad to have both these riders in the team next season. Kalle's father can't come over to be with his son and feels he is too young to be over here on his own even though Kalle himself was keen to return. Daniele has a new job and is basically happy to only ride a few times in the season in his home country.
So as you say back to the drawing board.

And how many riders do you need to drop from last year's team - is it one or two? It's always a shame when the champions are broken up, but over the years I've come to accept the points limit as a necessary evil. At least it's a reasonable limit this time - 42.50 without bonus points equates to around 47.00-47.50 with bonus points.

As I understand it, Edinburgh are hopeful of keeping five of their championship winning side for next season. So far they've signed Ryan Fisher and Andrew Tully, while none of the championship team have so far joined any other team. So, which two will miss out? I'm guessing it all depends on Thomas H Jonasson. If he signs then I think Lawson will be on his way, with Aaron Summers joining him.

ML - what averages would those riders come in on? Kalle would have come back on a 3.00 and Daniele on 4.18. And how many riders do you need to drop from last year's team - is it one or two? It's two riders who have to make way.

Just been reading on the Crapzone that the only female rider in the PL , Matthew Wethers , will once again be a Monarch in 2009 .

No great surprise to find Waltzing Matilda (a place on "Strictly Come Dancing" awaits, surely?) back with the Monarchs, which means the Monarchs are currently looking like this:
R Fisher..7.40 M Wethers..7.30 A Tully..6.80
Which takes up - assuming the BSPA figures are correct - 21.5 of the allocated 42.5, leaving 21 points for four riders. I guess the big decision for JDC and the gang at the Scotwaste Arena is Thomas H Jonasson (7.32) or William Lawson (7.84). The rumour seemed to be Elite League for Lawson, although his average would allow "doubling up" and that would seem the better option for Lawson, although Premier League places are getting scarce now. And Thomas H Jonasson might fancy "doubling up", although his extensive commitments would leave him with a hefty schedule if he did. Derek "Desperate Deek" Sneddon is surely a given for the Monarchs and his GSA for team building is 6.44.

The Monarchs were keen for the Rigger to sign up again for 2009 . Who's next then ? The desperate one maybe .

Vanity?

Yes, vanity. Jonasson has heavy overseas commitments, even if he is deciding to give the Allsvenskan league in Sweden a miss (one also can't help but wonder if SVEMO will prevail upon him to change his mind over that). With Edinburgh having to de-strengthen in the wake of last season's triumphs it might not be so easy to cover any absences. But he's a hugely gifted rider and it looks good for Edinburgh to have him. Thus, a vanity signing.

Fair enough. I never thought that "vanity" came in to team building

It sounds unlikely to me, but someone has posted a rumour that Anders Mellgren - a team mate of Thomas H Jonasson at Valsarna last season - will be Edinburgh's next signing. I'd be surprised, since he'd be on an assessed average of 7.00 and that would mean Edinburgh fielding a couple of weak reserves. But maybe JDC has another 3.00 starlet up his sleeve?
