The lunacy of the BSPA's rulebook ruthlessly exposed. A rider with an assessed average can't "double up", but can be a No 8, which is essentially "doubling up" via the backdoor. One rule circumvents another. It's madness.

We toyed with the idea before the AGM and spoke with him after then realised we might not be able to use him sought confirmation as such and had it confirmed. Do you have an opinion on the Chris Kerr situation, or is that "sensative"? No and not that I know of.

From speedwayworldtv:
IPSWICH say they are in the process of querying a regulation which has forced them to make a change at reserve. The Witches had declared young Australian Darcy Ward to take a doubling-up position in the Foxhall side, Ward also being set to make his Premier League debut for King's Lynn this year. But they have now been informed that doubling-up riders must have established a genuine Premier League average before they are eligible. At this stage, Ipswich have declared Carl Wilkinson and Kozza Smith to share that team place, with Ward coming in as No.8 - but club official Chris Louis says further talks are taking place. Louis said: "We are in dispute with the authorities, and Darcy could still come in. "But we are going down another route at the moment, and we are very pleased to have Carl and Kozza on board. "Witches fans like riders who give one hundred per cent, and Carl was a favourite with them in 2005 and 2006, and has plenty of experience. "And Kozza is on the way up, and has the ability to make an impression with us."

Why bother? I mean, on one level you have to admire the way that Ipswich continue to appeal and appeal over this and that, but being outsiders they never succeed. But it's a bit silly, isn't it? They're not going to get anywhere. Neither of them is CVS or the Orange Dictator. And they have Darcy Ward as No 8, which means just about the same thing as a "double uper".

Ipswich Captain for 2009 is .....Leigh Lanham,
and this taken from the Evening Star tonight:
Tobi can't wait to get started ELVIN KING
Last updated: 05/02/2009 12:35:00
IPSWICH Witches speedway rider Tobi Kroner has looked ahead to the 2009 season and said: “This is the one that really matters for me.”
The 23-year-old German, who first joined the Suffolk club in 2006, is already prepared and ready to start riding.
“My plan is to up my game more than I did last year,” said Kroner as he took shelter from the extreme cold in his homeland.
“I have served my apprenticeship and this is the year that must really count for me.
“I have set myself a target of scoring well home and away, and I have enough experience to do this now.
“Every year is important, but this will be an extra important season for me. I have made progress since I joined Ipswich, and now I want to accelerate this.
“Ipswich have signed me up again, which is what I desperately wanted - and now I have to do enough to repay them.”
Kroner will again be using Mark Loram's Stowmarket workshop and lodging with the 2000 world champion.
And he has pledged to avoid dropping down into a Witches reserve berth this year.
“I want to remain in the main part of the team for the whole while and fully play my part,” added Kroner, who shared one of the Witches reserve berths with Steve Johnston in 2008.
Ipswich's bottom end strength was one of the reasons they qualified for the end-of-season play-offs.
Kroner spent a couple of weeks soaking up the sun in the Caribbean with his girlfriend, but since November he has been involved in a strict fitness regime - running and doing exercises four or five days a week.
“My Polish and Swedish mechanic has been over with me and we have bikes sorted already,” added Kroner.
“I fact, I cannot wait to get started.
“I am fixed up with Gdansk in Poland and plan to ride five or six meetings in Sweden although I have not signed a contract with any team yet.
“This month I am going to spend a week practising in Italy and want to come over to England a week before the season starts to get in some practice somewhere.”
Kroner will be supported at Foxhall Stadium this year by Parkside Transport, Steve Smith Electrical and Orwell Motor Cycles, and he says that he is as well set up as he has ever been.
“Now it is up to me, and as I say I cannot wait,” added Kroner shivering in minus seven degree temperatures.
Kroner will be lining up with the Witches this year alongside Piotr Swiderski, Jarek Hampel, Dawid Stachyra, Leigh Lanham, Daniel King plus doubling up riders Carl Wilkinson and Kozza Smith.
The Witches have a strong-looking top end with Hampel and Swiderski plus King, and if Kroner can come up with the goods then the Suffolk-based side can make an impression again on the league table.
Fans appear to have bought into the team with season ticket sales continuing to go well.

Taken from tonight's Evening Star:
Simmonds delighted with local Leigh ELVIN KING
Last updated: 10/02/2009 11:11:00
IPSWICH Witches team manager Pete Simmons has welcomed the appointment of Leigh Lanham as captain for the 2009 speedway season.
“Leigh is the most experienced rider in the side and the eldest,” said Simmons. “He has no foreign commitments is English and lives locally.
“And on top of that Leigh has done the job before with Lakeside.”
Lanham will start his new duties against his former club as the Witches open their campaign with home and away challenge meetings against Lakeside.
And the traditional home and away Good Friday double sees Ipswich entertaining Lakeside in the afternoon, and then motoring down to Purfleet for the return fixture in the evening.

I'd say it's probably the best choice for captain although I've never been entirely convinced that a captain makes much difference, to be honest. After all, the global superstar was hailed as a "great captain for the Bees, but what happened to that great captaincy when it came to Great Britain?

Taken from today's Evening Star:
It's a honour to lead Witches - Leigh ELVIN KING
Last updated: 11/02/2009 11:13:00
LEIGH Lanham today said it is an honour to skipper his home town speedway club.
And the 31-year-old revealed that he plans to ride for Ipswich Witches for the rest of his career.
Lanham, who lives a stone's throw from Foxhall Stadium, began his career with Ipswich before spending the last 11 years riding for Lakeside.
He doubled-up with Danny Bird for the Witches in 2002 and 2003, and says he is delighted to be back full time.
“It is an honour to be asked to captain Ipswich,” said Lanham. “And it is a big thing to take on.
“I asked team manager Pete Simmons for a couple of days after he came to see me as it was a bit of a shock.
“We then sat down and had a chat, and I was pleased to take up his offer.
“Hopefully by the end of the season the rest of the team - and our supporters - will look back and say that I did a good job.”
Lanham plans to keep team spirit high, and added: “I want to bring us all together and ensure that we are all as one before meetings.
“I want to see some banter between the riders and make it a bit of fun.
“Jarek Hampel is one rider I don't know that well and I'm sure this team is capable of going places.
“I captained Lakeside last season when Adam Shields was injured and enjoyed it.”
And talking about his form, Lanham said: “There is nothing I would like more than to finish my career with Ipswich.
“John Louis rang me as soon as he knew I was not in Lakeside's plans and it has all fitted in well.
“I am experienced enough these days to get to grips with the Foxhall track and win over any doubting supporters.”
Lanham will continue to have his brother Nikki working as his mechanic, and both boys spend time working in the family fish and chip shot in Reynolds Road, Ipswich run by father Mike, who was a Witches rider in the seventies and eighties.
Ipswich have hopes of naming Australian Under-21 champion Darcy Ward as their number eight this year.
He was originally named as one of the club's doubling up riders, but this was knocked on the head as he did not have a 2008 average.
No one with an assessed average can double up. Ipswich are waiting on a management committee decision as to whether Ward can ride for King's Lynn in the Premier League - and also be the Witches number eight, and effectively come into the team at any time for any injured rider.
Carl Wilkinson and Kossa Smith are to share one of the Witches reserve berths, and their Premier League fixtures with Scunthorpe and Lynn respectively only clash once - and not until August.

Oh dear, it's Kozza, not Kossa. Mind you, a few people who've had riders in their team "Kozza-ed" might think "Tossa" is more appropriate.

Well I suppose we finally have resolution over the Darcy Ward situation now that the new rules book has finally been printed.
This brooks no argument over the debacle I'm afraid:
In the case of the Doubling-Up Riders, both must have a final 2008 PL CMA of 8.00 or less and the CMA of #8 must not exceed that of the lowest declared Rider (by CMA) and in any case must have a final 2008 PL CMA of 9.00 or less..

Yes, indeed, you've been CVSed. Better keep your eyes open, or the treacherous fiend will snap Darcy Ward as a Wolverhampton asset some time during the season. It is beyond comprehension that he's being allowed to ride roughshod over the rules so that he can accommodate Chris Kerr (who is only slightly more stable on a bike than Kozza Smith), without complaint. Well, if no one has the balls to challenge him, then the rest get what they deserve.
