Ok, so we have Lakeside leading the way with promotion at the moment, boasting a huge increase in season ticket sales. Peterborough doing their bit too...
I was at Coventry's Press and Practice tonight and saw the same old faces...
I started watching Speedway in 2006 and was gobsmacked at the "timewarp" it was in...WE know it's an incredible sport to watch, but what worries me is that we will eventually lose it..
What do we do?

What do we do? cant think there is a much better idea than bringing the sport to children,i have to say i think the peterborough initiative is fantastic, and the sport needs to widen the net to gain new supporters. i actually spoke to erin's(my 8 year old) headmistress today about the prospect of a 'speedway visit',and she was very interested, ridiculous really as currently it is no more than a fantasy in my head.

A tiny minority of people "get" speedway these days. And they don't mind what's served up on track. If speedway wants to broaden it's appeal then it has to serve up a lot better action on track.

You are absolute spot on. Could I advertise Speedway to work colleagues and former schoolmates with the dross provided in the past year or so at Brandon or on Sky. No way. People want entertainment and even the most ardent Speedway fan must admit the gatefest's we have to suffer are as boring as watching painting dry.

Do you go to Brandon every week Harry as I thought you only made the occasional visit? I'd agree with your criticism of the past year but not the "or so." 2007 was an awful season racing wise - especially the latter half after Colin Meredith started preparing the track. Over half of the teams couldn't compete with the Bees which resulted in boring, one sided matches. That's why I agree with the lower points limit and heat leaders being spread around a bit more evenly. I'm hoping to see some much better racing this year.....after Sheffield's visit.

Know what you mean Jacques, but I think they need to market it better before it can be sold.
Whilst some teams seem to be on the ball at the start of this season, and without seemingly being pessimistic or negative, I think its going to be a very tough year for any business competing for the leisure pound. What with the credit squeeze and house prices and negative equity coming back into it, and the rising costs of energy money is going to be tight.
They really need to get their A into G if the sport is continue . We are living in a world now where the dynamics are changing very fast. To stay in touch with it and survive you need to adapt, and quickly.

I personally don't think there's much wrong with the action being provided on track - the way the sport is marketed (or rather isn't) is the larger problem.
The racing is the main factor I go to speedway. It's terrific entertainment, and far better to watch live than football, rugby, and so on.
But there needs to be better value for money. Admission fees have spiralled in the last 10 years (way above inflation). The general public need to see 30 races for their admission money not 15.
And the sport actually needs to be promoted. Most promoters put on a meeting and just expect people to turn up. The meeting at Poole tomorrow is an example of how a meeting should be promoted - it's been in the press for months and heavily advertised.

Talking of the Coventry track did anyone notice who was doing track prep yesterday as i never thought to look. I've said before on marketing that schools are one way to go but you have to think wider as well, maybe look at businesses that are on your doorstep sponsoring or advertising in their premises, such as B&Q & TGI Friday's at Coventry. Lakeside are already doing this with the advert in the shopping centre.

Supermodels selling programmes in fishnets and mini-skirts . Bar vouchers for the loudest boo when Derek Sneddon is introduced on parade . I'll have more inovative ideas on speedways future later . Lorraine Kelly being particularly nice to a certain Glasgow supporter every home meeting .

Supermodels selling programmes in fishnets and mini-skirts . Fishnets do nothing for me. Depends who is wearing them . Lorraine Kelly in fishnets and suspenders and stillettos and nothing else , clutching a pint of John Smiths - sorry my imagination is running wild .
