It certainly is Mansell, he ditched his black helmet some years before that, although that is an odd picture, I don't remember the 87 running with that front wing too often, and there's no sponsor stickers on Mansell's helmet.
Was that picture taken during a practice session Jim?

but I think his memory is tarnished by his enormously underwhelming early showing in F1 and his incessant bloody whinging! I think if he could've just won the odd race and not moaned about the failing gearbox, the bad handling, the vibration or the lack of power, he would be held in much higher regard today. Donsking, It's interesting. You criticise Mansell for his whinging, and yet you often defend the ULTIMATE whinger, the cry-baby Ronnie O'Sullivan ;D ;D Looking forward to seeing Peter Ebdon crush the cry-baby into chalk dust when they meet this season All the best Rob

Oi, Genghis, don't go off topic. ;D Yes, it might have been practice in 1981 Ian. Is that significant in anyway then? Think I went to practice two years on the trot once with a mate and once with the family. Not sure which two years though now... Here are a couple of more and we shall leave at that for now... (Got a few more though to go through... ;D)

It's only significant insofar as they used to use practice sessions to experiment with things like front wings then, that car also ran with wings either side of the nose and no wings at all.
Nice shot of De Angelis in the sister car and Andretti with that lorry of an Alfa.
Edit: judging by all that grass trackside, that's the old Silverstone, so that's definitely 1981 and Mansell failed to qualify.

Jim,
Thanks - it's possible to track down the year of his photo.
Villeneuve would have been No. 2 in 1980 (after Ferrari's all-conquering 1979), and sadly wasn't around by the time of the 1982 British GP.
So it's from 1981.
All the best Rob

Dunno who the rider is, but it's Marco 'Lucky' Lucchinelli's Nava Olio Suzuki RG500!
I can't bring the owner of that helmet design to mind, but something tells me the stripe round it is yellow.

Its going to get a little bit more difficult now. Who is this ex F1 driver? Wild guess Mansell I think that's a very wild guess! I reckon that picture is 1981 again, but I have a picture in my head of an F1 driver with a white helmet, dark yellow band round the middle (possibly with his name written in it) sometime in the mid/late 70s; it was one of the narrow window Bell Stars with a nomex skirt and full air feed, so that makes it about 75-77. It was also a foreigner, so I'll have to start searching my old F1 pics now!

Came to me while I was waiting for my train home, the man with the yellow band round his helmet (surely there's an ointment he should be applying to deal with that ;D) is Jody Schecter, but there's no way that's Jody on that bike. I think you need to give us a clue Jim.

Firstly, my apologises for the delay in getting back to you on this, Only I have been away since Thursday. You have it dead right of course and it is indeed Jody Scheckter the 1979 F1 world champion in a Ferrari. The meeting was a 'World Stars' event at Donington Park in 1981 I am sure. They was all there; Roberts, Mamola, Sheene, Ballington etc. Yes he was riding Marco Lucchinelli's RG 500 Suzuki too. Well done, I was impressed. Not sure why you would think that he was not him on the bike though as it was him I am 100% sure and his leathers matched his helmet design and colour as you suggest. Plus I saw him there over the weekend. Not sure he took part in any race that weekend but he did practice. This is the picture without the slight 'doctoring' I made to the crash helmet.... Thought that the F1; 'egghead' though would might have attempted a guess at it as you laid down quite a lot of ground work. ;D Remember him I believe giving the only win for the six wheeled Tyrrell. How did you rate him in the grand scheme of things Ian?
