The Lakeside Hammers Speedway team’s plans for 2011 are slowly taking shape ahead of the festive period and the Club hopes to be in a position to announce much of the line up soon.
The Hammers are determined to put together a team to challenge for the Elite League title and will call on captain and number one Lee Richardson's experience along with that of Co Promoters Stuart Douglas and Jon Cook to put together a competitive 1-7 under the 40 point regulations.
Two riders already ruled out of those plans are Swede Jonas Davidsson and Finnish asset Joonas Kylmakorpi. Davidsson has been in talks with the Club over the last couple of months and it’s been agreed mutually that he will miss most of the British season to concentrate on racing in both Swedish leagues and in Poland. Davidsson was a shadow of his previous self last year after a slow start to the year followed by a succession of injuries but remains in the Club’s long term plans and has made himself available for cameo appearances should his services be needed at any part of the year.
Kylmakorpi will not make his expected return to Essex after receiving a superior contract offer from elsewhere in the League and as a result the Hammers have received a transfer request from the rider. The fee will be earmarked to bring in a replacement rider for the 2011 season.
Jon Cook states: "Stuart and I are excited about the team as it’s coming together and to have Lee's input is a considerable help. With JD (Jonas Davidsson) taking a sabbatical we will be looking at our heat leader options although it’s rather handy to have him available if needed during the season. Joonas' (Kylmakorpi) situation was not unexpected as he had a great end of the year and was likely to want to keep his set up the same and in any case in the current financial climate we won't be breaking our wages structure for any one rider.”
Cook continued: "It’s been a turbulent close season, so far, outside of the Club but I can assure our fans that we will have an attractive team and a full fixture list to enjoy come March with our first meeting set for Friday March 26th in a challenge against Swindon, followed by a return leg, designed to set up both teams for the season ahead with experience of the new silencers on small and large circuits. Before that we will also have several days of practise to make sure we will be in tip top fitness for the season ahead."

No doubt KevH will delighted that Lee "Mr. Maximum" Richardson is back

Whether it succeeds or fails is pretty much down to whether Ljung and Kakke can pull up any trees.
My optimism on Ljung is somewhat balanced by my pessimism that Kakke will be as inconsistant as ever but, barring major disasters, I would be surprised if we don't get near the play-offs with that team.

No doubt KevH will delighted that Lee "Mr. Maximum" Richardson is back He could actually be the trump card, Genghis. When he has one of his normal periods of sickness, we'll be able to choose a guest for him on a 'horses for courses' basis....a very handy tool.

Oh ye of little faith! Oh no Munners........don't tell me......Super Rico has turned over a new leaf and he'll be like a breath of fresh air this season ? In all honesty, with the line-up Cookie's put together, I think our season will be marginally better than Coventry and Peterborough's........really not impressed !!!

KevH, the eternal optimist Kev, I think the Lakeside management missed a major trick in not signing Lukas Dryml on a sub-5.00 average. Lee & Lukas would have made an excellent opening pairing for the 'Ammers. ;D
To be honest Kev, I'll just be grateful to see some Speedway at the Arena this season, and frankly, at the moment, I think that's by no means certain. We will just have to wait and see what the court proceedings, and the mooted injunction bring.
That's a fair comment to be honest, but I'm sure you'd agree that being grateful we've got speedway doesn't bode well for the future (of the sport). We should all be looking forward to a season of exciting, top class, entertaining speedway with one eye on the future. Sadly, wherever the fault lies.....and I'm sure there's blame on all sides, there is a huge cloud of indifference hanging over speedway in the UK at the moment....from the fans, the riders and even the promoters. Not a good sign !!!

Not a good sign !!! I couldn't agree more mate. I am not normally a doom and gloom merchant by any means, but the anticipation and excitement that I normally feel when getting ready for the new season is definitely not there this year. That's mostly due to the uncertainty I guess. Whatever the court action does or does not bring, this sport (and the reputation of it) will take a long, long time to recover - if indeed it ever does. Either the parties involved cannot see that, or they can see it and they don't give a sh*t. I don't know which saddens me more to be honest

With the new Speedway season now only days away the Lakeside Hammers have moved to strengthen their backroom staff.
The Hammers have added Team GB under 21 joint manager Neil Vatcher to their own team management set up.
Vatcher has earned a great reputation in a short space of time through his work with young Brits and joins the Hammers setup to look after the Club’s own assets who are racing in the joint Hackney Hawks venture with Rye House and to spearhead the Club’s search for future young talent. He will also be joining in the management of the first team to back up Co Promoter and current Team Manager Jon Cook.
Jon Cook commented on this addition to the Club’s management team by stating: "Neil and I have been in touch regularly throughout the winter and he is clearly a very smart and knowledgeable Speedway man who has learnt his trade via the mechanicing scene and has risen through the ranks very quickly. He has played a huge role in our decision to run the Hawks and without him and his commitment we would not have considered the venture and I believe he has a lot more value to bring to the first team squad over time as well. With Paul Hurry also continuing to be involved and heading Adam Shields' backroom team as well as continuing his mentor role for Marc Owen and Shane Hazelden we feel we are putting in place now a management structure that will be a huge attraction for securing up and coming young British riders as Hammers of the future."
The Hammers start their home season at the Arena-Essex Raceway on Friday 25th March when they face the Swindon Robins but before then they stage their Press and Practice Day on Wednesday 23rd March at 1pm.
