Courtesy of www.somerset-rebels.co.ukAfter discussions with last year’s skipper, Steve Johnston, as a result of which terms for next season could not be reached, the Somerset ‘Sharp’ Rebels have released the rider to find an alternative club.
Steve was purchased last season as a Somerset asset, and a contract with the previous promoting company Somerset Promotions Ltd, was agreed for a further two years. However the new promotional company OTA Promotions Ltd could not come to agreement on personal terms with the rider.
Debbie Hancock Somerset’s promoter has stated the Steve has done a wonderful job for us this season for which we are all extremely grateful, and has left the club on amicable terms, and would always be welcomed back to Somerset even if riding for the opposition.
The new Somerset promotional team are in final negotiations and hope to complete their 2010 team building by this week. Full details of signed riders will be announced for the Somerset 2010 team at the S.R.E.F Charity Event on Friday 27th November at the Oak Tree Clubhouse, when it is hoped at least two riders will be in attendance.

The 2010 Rebels Team Line Up Confirmed 28th November 2009 In front of a packed Oak Tree Clubhouse, the Somerset Rebels named the five riders that will be joining the previously announced Ritchie Hawkins and Sam Masters to complete the team’s 2010 septet. Returning from the 2009 side will be Emil Kramer, the fans’ Rider of the Year, and Cory Gathercole, together with Gathercole’s Australian compatriot, Jay Herne, who started last season with the Rebels, but left mid-season and joined the Birmingham Brummies. The first of the two new riders to the Somerset roster are 25 year old Tommy Allen, who was a member of the Rye House side that won the Premier League Championship in both 2005 and 2007, and has always shown a liking for the Oak Tree Arena on his visits to Somerset with the Rockets. Finally, the Rebels are delighted to be able to announce that the vastly experienced Shane Parker will be joining Somerset after spending the last six seasons with Glasgow, Australian Parker being consistently amongst the top riders in the Premier League during that time. “I am really pleased to have signed to ride for Somerset,” Parkers told the fans, “the move away from Glasgow, where I had six very enjoyable seasons, has given me a fresh challenge, as well as a home track somewhat nearer to where I live, and I cannot wait for the season to get under way.” The full 2010 Somerset Rebels line up (in average order); 1) Emil Kramer (8.42), 2) Shane Parker (8.15), 3) Cory Gathercole (7.69), 4) Sam Masters (5.00), 5) Ritchie Hawkins (4.52), 6) Tommy Allen (4.42), 7) Jay Herne (3.81) www.somerset-rebels.co.uk

Young Sam Masters looks like he could be a good signing....... Eighteen year old Newcastle speedway rider Sam Masters scored a stunning victory in the Johnnie Hoskins Plate meeting at the Newcastle Showground Speedway last Friday night.
Masters led all the way in the A Final holding off two vastly more experienced opponents in Chris Holder of Sydney and another Newcastle rider Jason Doyle.
Holder topscored in the 20 heats with a maximum score of 15 points, finishing one ahead of Masters and two ahead of Doyle to ensure that trio a start in the A Final.
The other rider to contest the A Final was decided by the B Final which brought together the next four top scorers – Sydney rider Jay Herne (12 points) and a trio of Newcastle teenagers in Alex Davies, Daniel Begley and Michael Penfold, all of whom score nine points in their heats.
Although Penfold had scored just a string of minor placings from his heats, he produced a great ride to comfortably win the B Final ahead of Davies and Begley while Herne fell.
By the time the A final came around the crowd had really warmed to Masters, who was interviewed on track before the start of the meeting to talk of his recently signed deal to race in the UK in 2010.
Masters did lose to Holder in the heats but reversed that result when it mattered - after a great start he rode clever lines to block anything that Holder could throw at him.
It was the second time in seven days that Masters had beaten Holder, who is to contest the Speedway Grand Prix series for the World championship in 2010.
At the presentation Masters was almost lost for words to explain his victory, but he certainly did plenty right to achieve it.
Doyle also took heart from his performance as he moves closer to full race fitness after a long layoff.
Masters, Holder and Doyle can now prepare for the Australian Championship as they have been seeded directly into the line-up, while Penfold and Davies will be in the field to contest the Qualifying meeting for the championship.
There are three rounds in the Championship starting at Gillman in Adelaide on January 2, the following night at Mildura and culminating in the third and final round at the Newcastle Showground on January 9.

Isn't he the young lad that rode for us early last year before Nicki Glanz came along? All white kevlars? Barely scored 2 points a meeting? And, I believe one of the few Reading assets left!!
Last thing I heard he's gone back to Oz vowing never to return....

News that Somerset’s Jay Herne has suffered a knee injury whilst competing in the recent Australian Long Track Championship has thrown the proverbial spanner in the Rebels plans for the start of the 2010 season, which is now just 4 week’s away. Initial thoughts that Herne would recover sufficiently to take his place in the Somerset septet receded with the news that the 25 year old required a skin graft on the damaged knee, but as club promoter Debbie Hancock explains the Rebels have options available to them; “While we hope that Jay will be fit for the start of the season, skin grafts can take a time to ‘bed in’ and we do not want him to rush back if he is not 100% fit. With this in mind we have made contingency plans to bring in a rider in for the short term, should needs dictate, to cover for Jay’s absence.” “We received a reduction in Steve Boxall’s initial starting average to 6.88 from the BSPA Management Committee, which was double his 2009 Elite League average with Poole, and gives us 5.84 to play with should we need to bring in any short term replacement for Jay.” www.somerset-rebels.co.uk

Bring back Werner. Although, I'd say it's 99% Simon Walker will be returning if Jay isn't fit to start the season, sadly.
