New-look Witches on track to impress ELVIN KING
Last updated: 09/12/2009 15:00:00
IPSWICH Witches will have three East Anglian-based speedway riders in their 2010 side.
The Foxhall Stadium-based club announced their Elite League side today and it includes three new faces in Ollie Allen, Claus Vissing and Linus Sundstrom.
Allen hails for Norwich and he will be joined in the side by Ipswich-based Scott Nicholls and Huntingdon-based Daniel King.
Robert Miskowiak after his wonderful exploits in the second half of last season keeps his place, and so does his Polish fellow countryman Dawid Stachyra at reserve.
Carl Wilkinson remains one of the two doubling up riders who will partner Stachyra at the bottom end of the side.
His doubling up duties will be shared by Swede Sundstrom, who will also be riding for Rye House in the Premier League.
Allen moves to Ipswich from Coventry and he will be joined in the main body of the team by Dane Vissing, who was with Peterborough in 2009.
In average order the side will be: Nicholls (8.08), Miskowiak (7.69), King (6.80), Allen (6.29), Vissing (4.53), Stachyra (3.89) plus Wilkinson (3.34) and Sundstrom (3.37).
“I am looking forward to managing this side and it is one that I'm sure will do well,” said Ipswich team manager Pete Simmons.
“We had riders approaching us this winter and this is good to see.
“Work on widening the Foxhall circuit is to begin early in January, and this has helped with riders looking forward to riding on what should be a more exciting track.”
There is no place next year for Tobi Kroner, the young German who has been a member of the side for the past two years or so.
Witches manager Chris Louis is expected to stage a spectacular 'Farewell' meeting at Foxhall next season to celebrate his 21 years as an Ipswich rider.
He has been doing most of the team building work for 2010, although his father John will remain the club's figurehead and promoter.

Probably more of interest here than it is in the Polish D1 - Dawid Stachra has signed for Gdansk, and says he can't see it interfering with his British commitments, or vice versa.

Allen hopes for fresh start with WitchesMIKE BACON IPSWICH Witches new-boy Olly Allen is hoping to put a heart-breaking few seasons behind him, when he lines up for the Foxhall side in 2010. The 27-year-old, Norwich-based racer, has had to cope with the tragic loss of his mother and uncle, both through cancer, as well as a catalogue of injuries - including a broken leg - all in the last three years. Now he is hoping a fresh start, with his move to Foxhall, will kick-start his career and all to the benefit of the Witches side. “I just need a clear run,” Allen admitted. “The last two or three seasons have seen huge personal upsets in my life, with the deaths of my mother and uncle, as well as bad injuries. “I think both Coventry and myself thought it was time for change. I haven't left Coventry on a bad note. “But it's about Ipswich now, and I'm really excited about joining them, really excited. Ipswich were my number one choice when I knew I would be leaving Brandon.” Allen, who celebrated a testimonial at Coventry last year, is a Bees asset and has spent the last four seasons with the Bees. Before that he spent one season at King's Lynn, the rest at Swindon. And there is little doubt his move to Ipswich has rejuvenated his spirits. “I can't even start to tell you how happy I am getting a spot at Ipswich,” Allen said. “The last few years at Foxhall, I have ridden really well. I've known Chris Louis and Scott Nicholls for many years and I think my average (6.3) is way low on what I am capable of. I was averaged eight points a meeting before my injuries.” The new track shape is also something Allen is looking forward to. “I liked the old shape, but quite honestly it's not the shape I like so much, but the way the track is prepared. It's superb.” As for the Witches chances and his personal goals in 2010? “I really like the look of our team,” Allen added. “I think we look really good and I can see at least four riders in our team who are capable of upping their averages. The play-offs are a minimum target for us. “On a personal note, I want to get back into the Britain World Cup squad. I've been in it before, so I want to be riding well enough to get back in it again.” Follow Mike and all he's up to on Twitter.com - Mike_Bacon And look out for his quirky latest blog on: www.lovespeedway24.co.uk

Taken from Lovespeedway24:
Scott could be first GB pick: King
DANIEL King is backing former Great Britain skipper Scott Nicholls to be back to his best next season.
Nicholls will line-up alongside King at Ipswich after enjoying a good spell with the club in the second half of last year.
Said King: “Scott had a very bad season last year. I felt pretty sorry for him. But when he came back to Ipswich, he changed completely as a rider. He was absolutely unbelievable to watch.
“Obviously, the GP was a big sore point for him, but I know he got back on form with his league racing and he was back on form in Sweden.
“I know he's going to be back to normal for next year and he may well be first pick for the (GB) team.”

Vissing's high hopes in Witches family ELVIN KING
Last updated: 27/01/2010 12:52:00
By Elvin King
CLAUS Vissing is looking forward to becoming part of the Ipswich Witches speedway family following his winter move from fellow Elite League outfit Peterborough.
The 23-year-old Dane has switched from the East of England showground to Foxhall Stadium in his quest to ride a smaller circuit.
But there is another reason the rider, who started his British career with Stoke in 2007, cannot wait for the 2010 speedway season to begin.
“Peterborough is run like a business,” said Vissing while looking out on 20 centimetres of snow in his native Denmark.
“I've been told that Ipswich is more of a family club and that they talk nicely to each other.
“I'm looking forward to being part of that.
“When Chris Louis came on the telephone and asked what I thought about joining Ipswich it didn't take me long to decide that I wanted the move.”
Vissing, who will start in the team proper with an average of 4.53 gained with the Panthers last year, is keeping fit doing boxing training and exercising in the gym.
He is planning to ride for the first time in 2010 in Croatia a week before he turns up at Foxhall for the Witches press and practice days in the middle of March.
“Chris (Louis) has been keeping me informed about the track alterations at Foxhall, and it looks to be a positive move,” added Vissing.
“I am more at home on smaller tracks and wanted a move from the big circuit at Peterborough.
“So when Ipswich came in it was ideal although it will be a longer drive from my Wolverhampton base.”
Vissing has signed to ride in the Polish League for Lodz and in the Danish League for Fjelsted, but he is not anticipating riding in the Swedish League.
“I will be based for the season with my mechanic Gary Corbett in Wolverhampton so don't want too much travelling out of the country,” Vissing went on.
“It's a big year for me, and I want to ensure I do enough to stay in the Ipswich team proper.
“I've had some good meetings at Foxhall and I don't want to slip down into a reserve berth. And I also want my career to benefit from riding on a preferred small circuit.”
Vissing is looking for English sponsorship, and any interested concern can get in touch with him through the Witches club.

Ritchie Hawkins is No 8
taken from Ipswich speedway website:
Number Eight Is Announced Ipswich Witches are pleased to announce the signing of former British Under-21 champion Ritchie Hawkins as their number 8 rider for the 2010 Elite League season. Peterborough based Hawkins, son of former rider Kevin Hawkins, will also be riding for Somerset Sharp Rebels in the Premier League, a club where he has previously tasted success as a member of the 2005 Premier League Fours championship quartet.
Ritchie has enthusiastically grabbed the chance to gain Elite League experience with the Witches, travelling down from Peterborough recently to lend a hand with the remodelling of the Foxhall circuit: “It was great to get involved with the work on the track – I am convinced that the changes are going to mean more exciting racing this year and I am really looking forward to that”.
The signing of Hawkins adds yet more of an East Anglian flavour to the 2010 Witches side with Scott Nicholls, Oliver Allen, Carl Wilkinson, Danny King and Ritchie all hailing from this part of the country.
