PIRATES chief Matt Ford has added some much-needed pep to their reserve berths with the loan signing of Steve Boxall until the end of the season.
The young Brit arrives at Wimborne Road in place of Pole Karol Baran, who has been released after scoring just paid four points in three matches.
Boxall, 22, began the season as a doubling-up rider with Belle Vue but lost his place when Aces were strengthened with the signing of Morten Risager.
It will be his second spell with Poole Castle Cover, after he averaged a fruitful 3.64 in 11 league and cup appearances in 2007.
Boxall’s arrival also boosts Pirates’ chances of salvaging some silverware from a horrendous season as he is eligible to line up in their Knockout Cup quarter-final, second leg, tie against Aces on Monday, July 27.
The Dorset club go into that clash trailing by five points from a 49-44 first leg reverse.
But Boxall notched a match-winning 10 paid 11 against Poole when Belle Vue sneaked a 45-43 home league triumph in April.
And Pirates will be hoping he can repeat that feat in the cup so they can succeed on aggregate and fix up a semi-final against Coventry.
Ford said: “Steve was unfortunate to be dropped by Belle Vue earlier this year after achieving a CMA of 4.18 in six league matches, but sometimes when one door closes another one opens.
“We’re extremely happy to have Steve on board. We’ve worked with him before when he did a good job for us and I’m sure he will again.
“There’s no pressure on him at all. Our number seven position hasn’t been getting us any points, and we know Steve is a better rider than that.
“He wants to make a go of it at Elite League level and he has a chance to do it at Poole.
“Steve makes his debut for us against Ipswich tomorrow, when Scott Nicholls and Troy Batchelor also line up for Witches.”
