It is a difficult one this testimonial malarkey . Due to points limits and riders being forced to move , or forced out altogether , it's very hard for riders to remain with the one club for anly length of time , unlike in the days of Steve Lawson , Chris Morton etc . I mean how many clubs has Mark Loram ridden for ? Testimonials should be for absolute deserving cases - a la Garry Stead , Lawrence Hare etc . Steve Johnston has been a great servant to British speedway , but presumably has earned a decent living from British speedway as well . Just because someone has ridden over here for many years - shouldn't automatically entitle him to a benefit meeting .

Not at every club he hasn't...I thought I'd get in before Genghis.. ;D The thing is you can pick and choose whether you go anyway, it's not as if it's mandatory is it...? I went to Sam Ermolenkos at Wolves, stood in the freezing cold snow and I'd never even seen him ride before..

It'll be nice for Johnno to be able to recoup some of the money he lost out on whislt riding for a certain promoter! I don't begrudge Johnno a testimonial either, he's one of the first riders to offer his services for others benefit meetings, testimonials etc. It doesn't even have to be a speedway meeting. Johnno was one of the first riders lined up to play in a charity ice hockey meeting organised by Rosco in aid of Per Jonsson's benefit fund all those years ago. He might not be everyone's favourite, but he is one of speedway's good guys and although I won't be able to attend his testimonial I wish him all the luck with it.

I reckon you've pretty well summed Johno up there. Many don't deserve testimonials, Johno puts a hell of a lot back in and good luck to him
