It was the 40th anniversary of the Berwick Bandits in 2007 and what a disaster it turned out to be, with the club doing badly in the Premier Trophy and then even worse in the Premier League, finishing well adrift at the bottom of the pack. So, things can surely only get better in 2008, but what sort of team will Peter Waite be tracking come March. Sadly it seems unlikely that the Weirdity will be returning, as much as we'd all love to be engulfed by the weirdness again. And his compatriot Stanislaw Burza also seems unlikely to be welcome in the cruel, crazy town next season. Michal Makovsky will be welcomed back with open arms, if he decides to stay with the club and I rather think he will. He's been a fine servant to the club and remains a wonder to behold around Shielfield Park on his day. But he's no "team leader" - he's a useful second tier rider and that's the role he should be filling. Rumour suggests that Waite could be turning his back on the Poles and back towards Poland's near neighbour the Czech Republic, with Adrian Rymel, Josef Franc and late season signing Matej Kus all being linked with the club. And then there's the outrageous rumour that a major sponsorship is in the works that'll provide the wherewithal for Waite to shock the league by signing Lee Complin. That sounds like pie in the sky, but Waite's forever tilting a windmills and such a coup would appeal to him - but can he pull it off? It all remains to be seen, but here's a place for us to discuss rumour and fact about the 2008 Bandits.

Who do you think will be the two that they keep? Personally i think it will be Makovsky and Kus.

Makovsky and the Weirdity - Sam Martin put a whole lot of effort in and still didn't score the points, so why bother with him again?

David Meldrum was at the Messiahdome on Sunday and said he was of to America - this time for good . So you're safe as regards that option ;D

Yes maybe young Sam did not get the points his efforts deserved, you must remember that he is a youngster learning his trade who at least should get a chance to improve. However such is the upside down world of PW, Sam may not get his chance or maybe his own club may take a chance on him and genghis can wax lyrical about one of Oxfords very own assets. Think you are wrong about Rempala, dont think he will be back.

Would that be entirely wise for the Bandits - you just know the Weirdity would probably stir himself just enough to score a maximum on his visits to the cruel, crazy town.

This was posted on the BSF:
Berwick have confirmed that five riders have been released and made available for other clubs to sign on loan for 2008 after being told their services would not be required by the Bandits next season. They are Stanislaw Burza, Jac Rempala, Andreas Bergstrom, David Meldrum and Arlo Bugeja, who of course only rode a handful of meetings towards the end of last season during the injury crisis. Of the remainder, no decision has yet been made on Michal Makovsky, although a question mark still hangs over his future at Shielfield. Peter will make a decision on Michal after the annual conference when the new points limit is set. As for Sam Martin, he is not a Berwick asset and he reverts back either to Oxford or the BSPA. Meanwhile, Peter has slammed some of his riders who have turned up the opportunity to attend tonight's end of season presentation dance and apologise to the fans in person for their failings on track in 2007. David Meldrum is the only rider expected to put in an appearance.. "I am extremely disappointed that some of the riders just couldn't be bothered to put in an appearance," he said. "I know most of them are out of the country, but for some of them it would only have cost them £70 to get a cheap flight. Someone would have picked them up at the airport and their accommodation would have been provided. "But these guys let us down on the track last season and now they have let the fans down again. "It might sound harsh, and it might upset some people, but I am only telling it like it is. "The riders I am talking about were paid well to ride for us last year. They came across when they knew they could earn some money. As everyone is well aware we had a disastrous season, one of the worst in the club’s history. The presentation evening would have been the perfect chance for them to stand up in front of the fans and apologise for the way in which they performed. Had they done that I think they would have won a lot of respect from the supporters. "But as it is they can't be bothered and that really annoys me. It just shows that nowadays some riders don't really care about what goes on outside the meetings."

Boo, hiss, hiss, boo. But hopefully some far-sighted promoter will sign the Weirdity and reap the benefit of having the second wonder of the speedway world riding for his club.
