It looks increasingly likely that the Heathen capital will end up with a GPer among their ranks this season, since Kaj Laukkanen seems likely to be called up for the Malilla GP to replace the injured Jaroslaw Hampel.

I find it quite incredible how this old nugget keeps coming back.
As common practice we have a sweepstake every year at Cardiff - my Uncle has a knack for getting the worse rider. Out comes Kaj - he was the butt of our jokes all evening as he proudly had Finnish colours in his face paint. Ever since, we have a soft spot for him and he keeps appearing - World Cup's, a spell at Belle Vue and now a GP.

For the second time as well , as the wee Italian bloke with the girl's name got an outing at Lonigo in the first GP of the season . But how does a rider with a struggling second tier British club get the nod over more deserving cases anyway ?

Monarchs have an excellent tradition of bringing on GP riders. Who can forget (and I'm sure HenryW will lunge at the opportunity to remind everyone) the halcyon days of 1996 when wee Alfie beat none other than Billy Hamill (who went on to win the World Championship) in the GP at Lonigo. And then there was ... oops tradition was maybe a bit ott. Rico

And you might have another if the " poo boy " comes through the final qualifier or perhaps not In spite of his rise through the ranks I wasn't a big fan of his during his time with the Monarchs, so you won't find me singing from the rooftops about 'poo boy'. 2 reasons I don't think he counts in the list of GP Monarchs are a) He's an ex-Monarch, rather than current and b) He's not good enough imo. In the SWC (ok quite a hot competition) he looked mediocre at best. Rico

It could be argued that Kaj Laukkanen gained his place on merit in last year's GP Qualifier. No argument about it, as far as I'm concerned. He did gain this place in the GP on merit, having competed in the qualification tournament and having finished in a position that made him second reserve. I don't know about anyone else, but the line-up for the qualification final in Vojens looks rather mediocre.

A pretty tenious arguement though as this season's form has been pretty poor overall . And Lindback's form this season has been, for the most part, fucking awful, yet he's in the GPs proper - he didn't even bother with the qualifiers last year.

Aye , but at least Lindback has been fucking awful at the top level . The young laddie Davidsson at reserve deserves the chance more than Laukkenen . He looked quite lively on his last GP outing .

Laukkanen was fucking awful at the top level with Belle Vue, that's why he's slumming it in the West Lothian badlands these days. Wonder if a bit of time under the tutelage of the Messiah in Glasgow would work wonders with Lindback?

No-one can argue that Jonas has been flying this season (especially in Sweden and the SWC/SGP), however the qualification for this seasons GP (and reserves) is based on the SGP Qualification Final 2006, won by Jagus and also saw Holta and Andersen qualify. People moaned previously that you couldn't qualify for the Grand Prix circuit and now you appear to be suggesting that the qualification should be ignored when it comes to the replacement riders ? I'm sure Kaj will do just fine in the GP and he fully deserves his slot based on last years qualification efforts. Rico

I agree with you, young fellow, I just wish a few of the sport's "Princes" would take the qualification tournament seriously.

It was just a kneejerk reaction to a Monarch gracing the world stage .
