And surely Northern Irish riders would qualify for Team GB? No, because we affiliate to the FIM through the ACU which is only responsible for Great Britain (plus the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands). The MCUI is responsible for the whole of Ireland, so presumably Northern Irish speedway riders would represent Ireland. In fact, I think there may have been an Irish ice racer a few years back.

But can you claim to be English on any official forms. Can you hell as like you have to be bloody British I'm not British I'm fucking ENGLISH Me too. In a few years it will be a CRIME to be English (if it isn't already). It must be the only country in the world where you can be called a racist for flying your national flag (BTW I'm NOT a racist, I work for an Asian company).

What fucked me up when it came to national teams, was when Barry Briggs, Ivan Mauger et al used to wear the Union Jack bib. Well, the New Zealand flag does have a Union Flag incorporated in it. Then all of the South Africans that played cricket for the MCC/England. Surely the rot set-in years earlier with the selection of Ranjitsinhji and the Nawab of Pataudi for the England cricket team?

It must be the only country in the world where you can be called a racist for flying your national flag Not this one again. Where can't you fly your flag (except in the imagination of the Daily Mail : ? I see plenty of them flying around here, in fact there's one flying outside the local corner shop (run incidentally by Indians). You can't write English nationality on official forms because there's no such thing. You can be of English birth or parentage, but until we declare independence from the UK, you can't be something that doesn't exist.

You can be of English birth or parentage, but until we declare independence from the UK, you can't be something that doesn't exist. The other side of this is, since the Scots, the Welsh and the Irish have their own parliaments, does the UK exist in any recognised form? The English may try and perpetuate the idea of the United Kingdom, but the truth is the other three constituants have fought long and hard to devolve from it, which goes back to Honies' original point..........................bring back Team England!

Well, the Welsh never fought especially hard and it was touch and go whether the referendum would go in favour of devolution. And half of the Northern Irish population is more devoted to the ideal of the United Kingdom than any other part of it, while the other half wants incorporation into the Republic of Ireland.

Donsking, Personally I don't give two hoots whether team is called Great Britain or England or whatever. As long as it doesn't have the horrible "team" moniker at the start of it. Yuk!!!! All the best Rob

Did the Scots not try and enter the WTC independantly a few years ago and get told to bugger off by the FIM, cos they were already represented by the team racing under the name of "England" at that time?

Now, Desperate Deek mixing it with the stars in the SWC would be something to worry about, young fellow. Desperate Damian versus Desperate Deek on the 1st bend - it doesn't bear thinking about.

There was always the chance that this thread would degenerate into politics, a subject I try not to get involved in, but all the Welsh I know fiercely wanted independance, and the fact that Northern Ireland is split 50/50 goes some of the way to explain why we have been in conflict with them for so long. What interests me more is the farcical notion brought up by Mr Muis, ie that the ACU/FIM recognise the IOM and the Channel Islands (when those areas don't recognise the UK) but Ireland is a totally different place. That's just bollocks.
