My second Saturday night at home in two weekends and no speedway GP tonight so old Jimbo is a bit bored. (Looking forward to Croft BSB next week....on the road on Thursday... ;D) Just had a bar-b-que in the garden with t'wife so now annoying the neighbours bashing out the CD's. (Its a sign your getting old when you 30 something year old kids ask you to turn the music down.. : Just played the Wilburys but now onto the guitar stuff. Eric Clapton (god) and some Lindsay Buckingham.. God how do they do that? I can only play four chords which does not make a tune after 3 years practise.. My favourite guitar rift is the one from the Walker Bros 'No Regrets'. But I have heard one a couple of times on the radio with a fantastic guitar intro by the Rolling Stones. Would it be Gimme, something? Where is that DK DJ when you need him... ;D What guitarists, ney sod lets go for it - any bloody music you like to play when bored? ;D

That's 'Gimme Shelter' Jim................
Fav guitarists would have to be Les Paul, the granddaddy of them all, and Danny Gatton, the equally talented grandson!

Jim, Danny Gatton was very much like Les Paul in that he specialised in ultra highspeed playing and really pushing the envelope of what an electric guitar can do soundwise. He first came to prominence after he appeared as a teenager on a C&W TV show in the States, sometime in the late 50s. Completely self taught, he played 'Foggy Mountain Breakdown', a country standard which is meant to played on the banjo, due to it's speed; Gatton played a guitar, and was eventually playing so quickly, the house band couldn't keep up. He went on to become a much in demand session musician, and did stuff in his own right, one of the best of his albums being '88 Elmira Street', if you ever see a copy of this, I highly recommend it. Sadly, he's no longer with us (unlike Les Paul, who is still touring and playing, I reckon he must be in his 90s now!), but there's a fair bit of him on youtube. For your delight and delectation, here's a clip of him doing 'Sleepwalk', a tune you might remember as a hit for Santo and Johnny in '59; it's not the fastest I've seen him play, but for sheer technique, this is probably one of the best 3 minutes of virtuoso guitar playing you will see............ www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyjtW-rvWoQ

There was a weird film about the Stones by Jean Luc Godard called Sympathy for the Devil.Couldn't really recommend the film, but there was a fantastic section with Keith Richards trying out different riffs for the song,Sympathy for the Devil But to get away from rock guitarists, what better on a lovely summers evening that Paco de Lucia(here with Larry Coryell) www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5RGpQmWtTI&mode=related&search=

Morning Jimbo! I hate to admit it but one of the first singles I bought was "Jack of Diamonds" by the incomparable King Of Skiffle Mr. Donegan hisself. For a good grounding in "Guitarists 101" you've gotta begin at the beginning with Link Wray and "Rumble" www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUHz0i8_ziAEven tho' this particular version was taped in '78 it first appeared some 20 years earlier and was a major inspiration for the Guitar Heroes of the '60s. From there on it depends which route you want to travel; Robin Trower, perhaps; The Allman Bros with three top-liners; Wishbone Ash with a couple; Oooooooh Frank Zappa; John McGlaughlin or Carlos Santana; Leo Kottke; all Guitar Legends in different genres - as long as its LOUD IDGAF!

And now, if this works (and courtesy of Jim for hosting it for me), here's my dream ticket, in terms of guitarists. One of my favourite tunes (Sweet Georgia Brown), as performed, live, by Danny Gatton and Les Paul; starts a bit slow, but give it time.......... www.jbsportsimages.co.uk/paul.mp3

Well i've been playing my guitar for about 2 years and a couple of heroes of mine that I aspire to in guitar world, well I know he's a bit of a perv but Townsend from The Who is just great to listen to in Pinball Wizard and Won't get fooled again. I've now perfected I can't explain which also another terrific song I love to jam to. Another I feel is mocked and never given credit to is Francis Rossi off The Quo. Forget the 12 bar listen to the riffs and changes in any lead, utterly mesmorising, none of this waaah eeeooowwww wah wah etc but pure chord and lead heaven. Others I could name Slash, Keith Richards and Noel Gallagher I can appreciate but Townsend and Rossi for me anytime
