Anyone else remember the plastic clips that used to come on bread bags and you'd clip them all on to the brake cables on your bike? And what about when you could actually get something free in your crisps rather than having to text in a code? Or when carnivals were the event of the year rather than fourteen beauty queens and a majorette? What happened to all the fun stuff?

What happened to all the fun stuff? you sound a bit maudlin, today schumi. most of us hanker after the past,on occasions, but don't kid yourself,it was all "beer and skittles". i have a little laugh to myself(sad bastard that i am)when i read comments about speedway being processional, and how in the "olde days" there was so much passing, but when i go on my weekly reasearch trips,i find that people were bemoaning the lack of excitement as far back as the 20's and 30's. mind you at least pubs sold light ale's

No, not maudlin - just thinking back to things you don't see any more. It's probably a good thing they no longer put prizes in crisp bags because some stupid idiot is bound to swallow one after mistaking it for a crisp.

On the subject of things you don't see any more, gone are the days of the smartly uniformed and heavily drilled Brandon track 'army' marching proudly out to do their bit for King Ochiltree and country. Granted the fourth guy from the back didn't know his arse from his elbow or his right from his left, but they were all prepared to go over the top and do their raking duties. They were artists at work - creating a striped effect likely a freshly cut grass court, with an elaborate flourish at the end of each drag.
These days the band music is still the same, but its a sluvenly, grudging amble in ill-fitting dodgily coloured boiler-suits and as for wielding a rake, well, they just stand around now and watch progress in action in the form of the wondrous whirling tractor-hauled wonder-wheel.
Is nothing sacred?!!
And what happened to the empty fizzy pop bottles that you got 10p back on from the track refreshment booths? Me and my mate used to turn a tidy profit each week, having scavved all over the car park and through the bins..
Is nothing sacred?!!
And where is Dave Lanning these days - a commentator to rival the likes of Walker, Motson and Waddell if ever there was one?
Is nothing sacred?!!
;D ;D ;D

Actually, I wonder if he's still of the same opinion. Mr Wibblemuis seems to be going through a rebellious phase judging from some of his recent posts I've seen, and may have changed his mind. ;D Something else I miss: Supergran and Rentaghost.

Funny you should mention old tv shows, Mrs J and I were reminiscing about the Wombles yesterday. Admittedly this was prompted by my comparing my wife to Orinoco's desire for another '40 winks' - a discussion which then lead us on to working out which Womble was most like each of the cats - but the Wombles was top quality viewing!

I see you omitted the fact that the Wombles Album was the first record you ever bought..... ;D I had that too. Still have, I think. McC. Billy Connolly either wrote/sang/both the lyrics to Supergran. I'd hate to see it now because it would be cringeworthy, the same as many shows you used to remember as being good. Still, loved watching it when I was ickkle.
