It was interesting listening to the Swindon get together at the Abbey Stadium tonight, because Terry Russell stated quite clearly that there is no way for a Premier League team to move up into the Elite League unless they win in the EL/PL play-offs.
However, on this very forum when Schumi interviewed Matt Ford a few weeks ago, we got this response:-
2..There has been much discussion about the newly introduced promotion and relegation rule in speedway. As you know the idea has been tried before and for various reasons didn't work out. Assuming for a moment that now is the right time to introduce it again and it's a success, does it not restrict the number of EL teams to the current nine, or is there room for expansion if the opportunity arose?
It was going to be that way - promotion/relegation would be the only way in. But I tabled a motion, which was passed, that will allow any club who wants to come up to do so. There are 2 clubs who at this point in time have ambitions to come up from the PL. We need to be able to allow them to do that and increase the size of the league if we can, if and when they want to do it.
What do you make of this?

What do you make of this? That Terry Russell was getting the drinks in when this particular vote was taken.

And Chris Louis said:
5..I believe you worked on the promotion/relegation committee. Is there any way a PL team can apply to join the EL, other than promotion, during the next 3 years, or is the EL having a final total of 9 teams now? The plan is to make promotion the only way to move up in to the Elite League, although if new tracks join the Premier League then it may be necessary one season to have the winning Premier team automatically promoted with the second spot raced in the play offs.

EDIT: Hey, I'm no longer "Schumacher's No. 1 Fan" ;D

Promotion and relegation has long been an unrequited love for the Orange Dictator - he believes it bestows credibility on the sport (which I don't agree with). However, to have a means of access to the Elite League outside of promotion obviously ruins that.

What do you make of this? I don't make a thing of it. No doubt the rule will go out of the window on the first occasion that the BEL desperately needs an extra team to make up the numbers.

Or, they might do the same as they did at Oxford, and keep a club in the Elite League, when the best welfare for that club would be allow it to drop down into the Premier League.

Which makes promotion and relegation a daft idea in the first place. It is a daft idea. And Terry Russell's logic is flawed, since there are many professional sports which do not have promotion and relegation. And it won't work, which means that a couple of years down the line it'll be dumped, which hardly brings credibility to the sport.

Terry Russell made no bones about the fact that he can't see ANY PL team beat ANY EL in a two legged play-off, and he admitted the chance of any PL moving up using this method is unlikely in the extreme.
