It is agreed that Gene Bonsignore is the oldest rider on the USA's East Coast but on the USA West Coast (see relent section) he is 'bettered' by Harlan Bast Senior. www.speedwaybikes.com/rw/uharla_b.htm

An interesting diversion in regard to 'oldie' riders: In South Africa, Hansie Kleynhans, the present Northern Regions Champion in his 'Speedway Stars' class, will be 70 in July. He was the previous season's National Champ for that class.

From a promotional contact in the USA I understand that Chip Lengle quit motorcycle sport in 2007 because of a lack of sponsors. At the time Lengle was racing flat-track in preference to speedway. He had been racing speedway on a regular basis at the New York State tracks at Batavia and Action Park. He also went to speedways in the Mid-west, California and Canada where his talent and ability as a 15-year-old won him much favourable comment. The opinion at that time was that he had the talent and ability to graduate to a high level in speedway and he was recognised as being a serious contender for national championships in his age group. Unfortunately, there were then extenuating background family reasons for his decision to retire from motorcycle sport. The family reasons also resulted in Chip losing much needed sponsorship and he dropped out of motorcycle sport. After some years away from the New York speedway scene, Chip attended several 2013 meetings as a spectator at the Champion track in New York but indicated he had little interest at that time in trying a come-back. People with a promotional interest in the USA believe that their domestic speedway lost a rider of great promise and natural ability when Lengle quit. One East Coast spokesman said of his retirement because of a lack of financial support, βIt does seem that an outstandng talent like Chip was lost to speedway altogether.β But there is now a hint that Chip might change his mind and make an effort to rekindle his career this season. It is understood that Mikey Buman, a regular on the East Coast speedway racing scene, could help towards a Lengle come-back in regard to equipment for the 2014 season. And Lengle said, βI do fancy again doing a few laps to see if the old zest for racing is still there.β
