PANTHERS v COVENTRY - PREVIEW
PETERBOROUGH legend-in-the-making Nicki Pedersen will come face to face with an East of England Showground icon – in his first ride for the club!
Pedersen, 33, will skipper the Readypower Panthers in their opening match of the new season at the East of England Showground tonight (Thursday, April 7, 7.30pm).
And Hans Andersen, who captained Peterborough to the Elite League title in 2006, will be at number one for last season’s champions.
Panthers’ team boss Trevor Swales said: “It’s a mouth-watering start to our 42nd season.
“Hans will always have his place in Peterborough’s Hall of Fame – and I’m pretty sure by the end of the year that Nicki will have joined him.”
Their clashes – they are likely to meet three times during the night – will be electric and it’s fitting that with fireworks on track the evening will end with a big bang as Peterborough will stage a major pyrotechnic display to mark the launch of the new season.
The first meeting will also feature several other headline stealing encounters.
Between them the two clubs will track the top three in last year’s Premier League averages, Peterborough handing a debut to Swedish starlet Linus Sundström while the Buildbase Bees include American Ryan Fisher and winter signing Kenni Larsen who won the PL Riders’ Final.
And two of the rostrum place-getters in the 2010 Polish Under 21 Final – runner-up Przemylsaw Pawlicki and bronze medallist Kacper Gomolski – line-up as rivals for the first time on a British track.
Pawlicki joined Coventry last season and was a major reason they pulled off their stunning championship victory but 18-year-old Gomolski’s only UK experience has been at the Panthers’ pre-season practice sessions.
Swales forecast: “Judging on what we have seen so far Kacper is going to be a big, big Showground favourite.
“He loves the track and has probably spent more time on it than anyone else over the last couple of days – and he’s already got his own fan following among those who have seen him in action.”
The two clubs will compete for the Hokey-Cokey Cup over two legs (the return is at Brandon on Saturday night) in a tongue-in-cheek reference to a winter in which both clubs have been in, out and then back in the Elite League!
PETERBOROUGH: Nicki Pedersen, Linus Sundström, Oliver Allen, Krzysztof Buczkowski, Troy Batchelor, Kacper Gomolski, Craig Cook.
COVENTRY: Hans Andersen, Richard Sweetman, Ryan Fisher, Kenni Larsen, Edward Kennett, Nick Morris, Przemyslaw Pawlicki.
