Hawks Return To Racing WEDNESDAY, 26 JANUARY 2011 11:42 In a joint venture between Lakeside and Rye House the clubs have reborn the Hackney Hawks as a 2011 National League team. The motivation behind the move by the Elite and Premier league clubs came from the lack of developing British talent in the sport, after being accepted at the National League AGM on Tuesday the new team will race at both Lakeside's Arena Essex Raceway and Rye House's Hoddesdon track come March. Lakeside Co Promoter Jon Cook said to Lakeside's website: "This is a new exciting venture for us and will give our fans a chance to see the development of our young riders at our Arena-Essex Raceway. Rye House owner Len Silver also commented in the same item: "I am very excited to be linking with our friends at Lakeside, and I am sure this move will be a great success and a big factor in producing future stars for both of our teams." www.speedway365.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1785:hawks-return-to-racing&catid=344:hackney-hawks&Itemid=637

I know this will ruffle a few feathers, but this kind of thing really bugs me. It's great that the two clubs are investing in riders for the future and giving them the opportunity to get into the sport......but why call the team Hackney? It's not Hackney is it ?

I suppose to appeal to a set of fans who may not otherwise watch the team. Dudley works on a similar level, although it is born out of Cradley supporters Club etc. Certainly it has captured the imagination of the fans and attendances were comparatively huge last season.

Actually looking forward to their first 'home' meeting on Friday and kinda completes the circle for me. My first match was Crayford Kestrels v Hull Vikings in 81 and when I moved to London in 96 my first match there was London Lions (nee Hawks) at Waterden Road. Despite my brief sojourn in Berkshire I have returned to spitting distance from the old site, now occupied by some bloody great stadium for some unknown reason (!) and really hope there is some merchandise tomorrow as my Kestrel's T-Shirt (that my mum made) no longer fits me!
I know it's not really Hackney but it's still 'home' and we still have David Mason!!!
The magnificent seven ride!!!

So the Hackney experiment failed. after just one season. What were the reasons, given that a similiar Cradley experiment has been a huge success?
Is there no longer enough interest in speedway in the London area?

Is there no longer enough interest in speedway in the London area? I think Cradley didn't close because of a lack of support, but because their track was sold from under them. Wasn't the reverse the case with Hackney? It closed because crowds were unviable, not because the track disappeared. I also seem to remember Len Silver claiming in his autobiography that Hackney was never really very lucrative even in the 'good old days',

I also seem to remember Len Silver claiming in his autobiography that Hackney was never really very lucrative even in the 'good old days', Wibblemuis, you may have a very good point there. I often wonder what would happen if Oxford "did a Cradley" and entered the National League, running at e.g. Swindon or Coventry. We did take a good amount of supporters to Reading in 2008 for Oxford v Wimbledon, far more than Wimbledon, who you'd consider a "bigger" name. But I think it's still too soon after the closure of the Cheetahs, plus you can't really do it while the old stadium is still standing there with a viable speedway track in it.
