1. The points limit is one to ensure that teams cannot build to powerful a team although obviously that didnt stop Poole building a team that was in all honesty head and shoulders above everything else. That's the skill/luck involved in team building. What goes around, usually comes around (unless you're Swindon of course ) 2. With respect to conversions and assessed averages these should have been sorted years ago with a practical and worked out formula that everyone could work to and fairly implemented so that no one is unfairly affected. Agreed, However, whilst sane people would agree with the need for some sort of team equalisation system, the constant tinkering to seemingly punish teams that manage to be successful under the system, just makes a mockery of such an idea. 3. Racing as such is always better when the standard of all racers is about the same, it hasnt been like in the EL for as long as I can remember, its generally always been two races in one although there are exceptions. Maybe, but the BEL clearly can't afford anything more than a few top riders mixed with the mediocrity these days. When the BEL really did involve the elite riders, it didn't draw enough fans either.

And another BSPA statement..... just rubbing salt into the wounds....grrrrrrrrr...... (my original text didn't say "grrrrrr", but the benefit of the keyboard is that you can retract things and replace them with something less impolite ) ;D BRITISH SPEEDWAY STATEMENT WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 01, 2010 BRITISH Speedway bosses have moved to set the record straight over the recent decisions made by Elite League duo Coventry and Peterborough not to take their place in the 2011 competition. The top flight has been given a facelift for the new season with Premier League clubs King's Lynn and Birmingham, who boast some of the best tracks and facilities in the country, making the move up. But the absence of reigning champions Coventry and 2006 winners Peterborough has caused much debate. British Speedway Promoters' Association Chairman Alex Harkess said: "Let me first of all say how saddened I am that two clubs of such great stature will not be competing in the 2011 Elite League. "But the bottom line is simple. Both clubs left the AGM and therefore failed to declare their intention to take their place in the Elite League. "It was their decision and their decision alone. They are, of course, entitled to such a decision however regrettable it may be for the fans of those clubs and for the sport in general. It must be emphasised, however, that the BSPA is a democratic organisation. "I sincerely hope it isn't the end of Elite League Speedway at both venues and that, perhaps, they will both return in 2012. "On the positive side, we have two excellent Speedway venues moving into the Elite League in King's Lynn and Birmingham and I'm sure the fans of both clubs are in for a treat in 2011 with some exciting racing. "And it's also good for the league to have some fresh teams and fresh venues, especially with the coverage provided by our friends and colleagues at Sky Sports." The BSPA can also confirm the Premier League line-up is now complete following Plymouth's elevation from the National League which means no further applications will be considered. (BSPA site)

The answer is ..... I don't know ! I just feel angry and upset that this has happened. I don't know who to be angry at. I guess I am angry with both. I wish Rick hadn't walked out, but who really knows 100% why he did? I wish they hadn't changed the rules - IMO those rules should be for 2012, giving everyone fairly plenty of time to prepare for these. I wish the BSPA would turn around now, and offer a weeks deadline for these two teams to declare their intention to ride in the EL. I think this should be done for the good of the sport, and not just for the 2 teams concerned. And if that were to happen, I would hope that they would agree, and put up with the rules, rather than lose speedway altogether. But I guess there's more chance of hell freezing over first...

I doubt we'll ever know what really happened. Even if both sides made detailed press statements about it, I'd bet that they'd differ. For all we know, both clubs may have been invited back, but chose to stick to their decisions. As good as it is to have two new clubs in the league, it's a damned shame that we're not looking at a 10 club league next year. That would have been great - and I'm sure that's something that every speedway fan would agree on. I'm gutted for all Peterborough and Coventry supporters that they don't have a team to follow next year. I'd be devastated if it was my club. I do think they'll both be back in 2012 but what damage will have been done to the fan base in the meantime? That's especially true of Coventry with Brum coming up. What percentage of their fan base will convert? I can't wait for the latest instalment next week when we see what the rules are that caused there to be such a difference of opinion!

From Sky...... www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,14465_6546668,00.html Coventry Bees and Peterborough Panthers have confirmed they are launching legal action against the British Speedway Promoters' Association. The BSPA, who run speedway in this country, have already confirmed that neither the Bees or Panthers would participate in the Sky Sports Elite League in 2011. On Wednesday the BSPA released a statement stating that because both clubs walked away from the annual AGM - where the season's rules and regulations are laid out - they had actually quit the league. The Bees, who are defending champions, and the Panthers have now issued a statement confirming they were looking at legal avenues. The statement read: "The Coventry Bees & Peterborough Panthers on the basis of legal advice from specialist counsel shall promptly be challenging the decisions taken by the BSPA recently. "Avtar Sandhu [Coventry owner] & Rick Frost [Peterborough owner] would like to assure fans that both clubs staff have been working together to find a resolution to the present situation. Please keep faith as that is helping us to stay focused on what is important to both our respective clubs. "A further update shall be released in the next few days."

AGM anarchy Russell admitted that Swindon were not too pleased with the outcome of the recent AGM, which has seen the Elite League turned on its head with champions Coventry and Peterborough both pulling out. And Russell stated that Swindon opted to carry on rather than 'spitting their dummy out' and walking away. "Poole, Peterborough, Coventry and ourselves all wanted the team points averages raised to 45 and we would have accepted a compromise of 42.5," said Russell. "But in a very volatile atmosphere - the worst at an AGM I have ever attended in more than 20 years - the vote went for 40 points which is only marginally more than the 39.5 we started with last season. "Attendances dropped markedly in 2010 and we at Swindon made an operating loss of £154,000. "One of the problems was the inability to accommodate Grand Prix riders in the points structure. It is a nightmare. The system is broken and it needed fixing. "However, we could have spat our dummy out of the pram but we didn't. "There is still the possibility of an olive branch being extended before the AGM reconvenes next Tuesday. "But, at 40 points, I have had to go back to the drawing board in my team building. "Scott and our new captain Simon Stead are in place and I am trying hard to incorporate the three young riders who did so well for us at various stages last season - Grzegorz Zengota, Thomas H Jonasson and Maciek Janowski. "It is our intention to announce the whole team at the fans' forum on December 16." www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,14471_6540544,00.html

Couldn't agree more Zonks 10 teams would have been worth it, the 40pts points limit would have worked for that surely! Just saddened by the self-destruction and that it has come to this Pip

"There is still the possibility of an olive branch being extended before the AGM reconvenes next Tuesday. That bit sounds promising. So maybe there is still a chance that we'll have a 10 team league next year. That would be fantastic. I still think the sport has been irretrievably damaged though, even if they do manage a dramatic volte-face.

Playing devils advocate yet again lol Would the Chapmans be happy with 10 teams in the EL when they agreed to join a league that only had 8 teams (and were desperate as well). I'v eno idea of the answer but I think they need to be considered in all this.

I'v eno idea of the answer but I think they need to be considered in all this. I'm sure they'll get a chance to put their point across next week SL. I would imagine that the existing 8 would have to ballot on whether or not to allow the other 2 clubs back in - if indeed, they want in. I doubt whether there are even any rules in place to govern this kind of situation, so they're probably making it up as they go along (no change there then!). Of course the BSPA need to be very very careful how they go forward from here, with a potential law suit in the offing. They could make the situation a whole lot worse if they keep making wrong moves.

Surely they can see that a 10 team EL would be good for the sport.....
