Eastbourne Speedway’s preparations for next week’s KO Cup ties against Lakeside have received a big boost.
It had looked as if the Sussex club would be without their No 1, Matej Zagar, for the second leg of the quarter final in Essex on Friday, September 24.
He’s riding in the European Championship final the next day in Poland and may have missed the Eagles’ match.
Now a way has been found of Matej being able to ride in England on Friday and in Poland the next afternoon.
Lifestyle Eagles’ co-promoter Mike Bellerby said: “I feel a bit like a travel agent after the last few days.
“Matej will ride for us at Lakeside on Friday evening. We will take him to Gatwick where he will catch an early-morning flight to Krakow.
“He will then be driven the 80 kilometres or so to the Tarnow track and arrive in plenty of time for the meeting, although he will miss practice.”
The fixture clash came about after the original staging of the final was postponed due to heavy rain.
News of Zagar’s availability for the second leg of the KO Cup came as the Eagles beat Wolverhampton 49-41 at Arlington on Thursday night.
It means the club has gone through the home “B” fixtures undefeated.
Bellerby said: “The KO Cup gives us a big chance to end the season a high. I have told the riders it is like the season starting all over again.
“We have a real chance of success in the cup and I hope as many people as possible will come to Arlington next Thursday to cheer the team.
“I believe we can beat Lakeside and go on to meet Wolverhampton or Coventry in the semi-final.”
Bellerby said the league win over Wolverhampton was a real boost to confidence, especially as the Midlands club had convincingly won at Arlington earlier in the season in the A fixture.
