This has been posted on the BSF:
Pam Oakes, wife of speedway journalist and manager Peter Oakes, recently suffered a massive stroke while undergoing major heart surgery. Pam is in a coma at Peterborough District Hospital and Peter is spending as much time as possible at her bedside.
Said Peter: "Unfortunately her chances of surviving this are terrible slim and basically we need a miracle. She is on the High Dependency Unit but has no movement at all, although she is breathing by herself."
Very sad news.

So sad - lost my Auntie 4 years ago in the same hospital due to a Massive Stroke and my Mum 2 years ago in exactly the same way. Really feel for Peter and the rest of the family at this time

Very sad news. I lost my aunty very suddenly and unexpectedly yesterday and it really makes you realise how fragile life is.
Best wishes to the Oakes family at this difficult time.

Message from Peter Oakes.....
As many of you will know my wife Pam suffered a massive stroke while undergoing major heart surgery at Papworth Hospital on August 12.
Since then she has been transferred to Peterborough District Hospital and is still in the Neurology/Stroke Ward (2Z) and likely to remain there for some weeks before, hopefully, continuing her improvement in the nearby Care Centre.
Initially my daughter Sarah and myself were told by doctors at Papworth that the chances of Pam surviving were very, very slim and at one stage we were told she probably only had two or three days to live.
Thankfully, with the dedicated help of staff in both the Critical Care Unit at Papworth and then the Intensive Care and High Dependency Units at Peterborough District Hospital, Pam is still with us and is slowly improving on an almost daily basis.
We know she still has an awfully long way to go but we are slowly piecing our lives together and looking ahead to the day when Pam can come home.
We know life will never be quite the same as it was but that is something I we have all now accepted and are prepared for the necessary adjustments.
I would like to personally thank all those connected with Peterborough Speedway who have asked about Pam’s condition and those who have phoned or sent cards.
Without Pam’s support and many sacrifices I would never have been in a position to be an owner and promoter of the Panthers from 1992 until 1998 and I certainly would not have returned to the Showground for the 2010 season.
Pam has confounded the medical experts and yesterday made another giant step forward when, for the first time, she was able to breathe on her own, having had the tracheostomy tube removed.
We know, finally, she is out of danger and after the longest seven weeks we have ever known, we can only look ahead and trust that she will continue her recovery.
She is also able to talk to us naturally after previously having to use a special voice box and hopefully her condition will carry on improving, no matter how slowly.
In the last couple of days she has also started to ask whether I had any speedway meetings to go to and that will make it easier for me to start attending again after only the occasional visit over the last seven weeks.
I am be grateful and indebted to Rick and Julie for their understanding of my situation and for their absolute total backing during what has been the most difficult period of all our lives.
They have generously allowed me the time away that I have needed and understood I found myself facing new priorities. Thank you to everyone from Pam, Sarah and myself.
PETER OAKES

That's a very moving piece. Really glad she's on the mend, and wish the whole family well throughout her recovery.
