FRENCH star Mathieu Tresarrieu will make his home debut for Peterborough on Monday – 12 years after falling in love with the East of England Showground!
Tresarrieu was still at school when he was shown a video of racing on the 336 metre Alwalton track by ex-Panther Philippe Bergé.
And he’s been waiting ever since then for his chance of racing at the circuit he rates his favourite track in the world!
He said: “I was only 12 and racing 50cc and 125cc bikes when Philippe, who lives quite close to our family, showed me the videos of Peterborough.
“I thought then it was a track I’d love to have as a home track in England but I never thought it would happen.”
Tresarrieu, 24, is one of three riders making their home debuts for the Readypower Panthers against Ipswich after last week’s sweeping changes.
Joining him as newcomers are Australian Rory Schlein, who is on loan from Elite League rivals Coventry, and Poland’s Kamil Brzozowski.
Brzozowski will go out in the opening heat after only three laps of the Showground track after his trial was cut short by a horror crash in which compatriot Karol Zabik broke his thigh and dislocated his shoulder.
It’s a new-look squad after the departures of Lewis Bridger, Ales Dryml, Klaus Jakobsen and Linus Eklöf.
And team boss Trevor Swales is confident the newcomers will settle in quickly.
He said: “Rory almost joined us two years ago and was on our list of winter targets until he signed a new contract at Coventry.
“He’s always liked the Showground and looked superb at Lakeside on Friday.
“Matt and Kamil struggled but they couldn’t have had harder debuts because it was their first time there and it’s not the easiest track for experienced riders let alone first-time visitors.
“They both say they’ll be much happier riding at the Showground although it will be difficult because they’ve not had any extended practice sessions.”
At least the new boys are arriving with confidence high: Schlein and Brzozowski were unbeaten by an opponent in Polish size Grudziadz’s 74-16 win over Miskolc on Sunday.
Tresarrieu was tenth in the opening World Long Track Grand Prix at Pfarrkirchen, Germany, finishing fourth in his semi final and just missing out on a place in the six-rider final.
Peterborough: Kenneth Bjerre, Kamil Brzozowski, Rory Schlein, Troy Batchelor, rider replacement for Niels-Kristian Iversen, Mathieu Tresarrieu, Krzysztof Buczkowski.
Ipswich: Scott Nicholls, Oliver Allen, Daniel King, Claus Vissing, Robert Miskowiak, Dawid Stachyra, Ritchie Hawkins.
