There seem to be signs that the old swagger is returning to the posts at the BSF of the devotees of the Pirates.
The last couple of years haven't been much fun for the thronging masses that congregate in their thousands to watch their speedway at Wimborne Road. The Poole posters at the BSF, led, as ever by the incorrigible Steve Shovlar charged into 2005 predicting a third successive title for the Pirates. But, in the end, 3M dithered and delayed making changes and everything fell apart, leaving the Pirates outside the play-offs. At the start of 2006, another title charge was on the cards, based largely on the surreal assumption that the Davidsson brothers would, under the guidance of the blessed Middlo, finally show their true worth - they didn't a Poole slipped into the anonymity of mid-table mediocrity, again.
Confidence on the south coast was waning. And few were particularly impressed with 3M's approach to team building for the 2007. But so far it's looking good for the Pirates. The gamble of signing world champion Jason Crump and retaining Bjarne Pedersen, which most suspected would leave the Pirates looking top heavy, has worked well. Crump and BP are providing Poole with a solid foundation to build results upon. And the lesser lights have almost all chipped in with solid scores to keep the scoreline ticking over in Poole's favour.
All of a sudden, everything's turning to gold for the Pirates, as is surely displayed by the stellar performances from that most bizarre of signings Piotr Swist. The only sour note has been the terrible displays by first Sergey Darkin and latterly Craig Watson.
So, will the Pirates end up as champs? I wouldn't bet against it and as the wins continue to come, the old swagger will return with a vengeance.
