STOCK CARS AT OXFORD STADIUM - HAVE YOUR SAY
SPEEDWAY fans have the chance to have their say to the local council regarding the possible introduction of stock cars to Oxford Stadium.
It has now been officially confirmed that stadium bosses have applied to run up to 20 stock car meetings at the stadium – with the details recorded on Oxford City Council’s website at www.oxford.gov.uk/PageRender/decP/Planning.htm
The planning department of Oxford City Council can be contacted either by telephone number (01865-252860), email (planning@oxford.gov.uk) or by writing to the following address: Planning Control and Conservation Team, Ramsay House, 10 St Ebbe’s Street, Oxford, OX1 1PT. The planning reference number of 10/00252/PDC should be quoted in any correspondence.
Particular problems regarding the running of stock cars would be access to the stadium via Sandy Lane for the large transporter vehicles, and the noise generated by around 20 stock cars racing each other (noticeably louder than 4 speedway bikes). Also stock car racing has no heritage at Oxford Stadium, unlike the speedway which ran for 59 consecutive seasons from 1949 to 2007.
At a fans’ forum in 2008, councillors Val Smith, Rae Humberstone and Bob Timbs all stated their opposition to the introduction of stock cars at the venue, and it’s likely such an introduction would need an environmental study to be carried out.
Oxford Speedway Supporters’ Club chairman Gavin Beckley said: “I would encourage people to write an email or a letter and have their say. I’m sure the council would be very interested to read our views and see the passion that still exists for the Oxford Cheetahs. If the stock cars are allowed to run, it could spell the end of any chance for the return of speedway to the stadium.”
