WELCOME MAT FOR KUS
CZECH star Matej Kus will make his East of England Showground bow in Peterborough’s opening meeting of the new season. World Cup ace Kus is the third confirmed starter in the opposition squad for the Readypower Panthers’ first taste of 2010 track action on Monday, March 15.
Kus, 20, is rated as his country’s brightest young prospect and will join three-times World Champion Nicki Pedersen and exciting teenager Lasse Bjerre, 16, in the all-star line-up.
Kus has had limited racing experience in Britain having made just two appearances for Premier League Berwick in 2007 when he was only 18. He hit the headlines then when he crashed at Glasgow and was unconscious for 45 minutes, before waking up talking near perfect English! Since then he’s established himself as one of the world’s brightest talents and was both Under 19 and Under 21 Czech Republic Champion in 2008.
Last season he finished third in the senior championship and was a regular member of his country’s World Cup squad. He was also the Czech Grand Prix wild card, his second appearance having been reserve in 2007. In the Under 21 World Cup he was the highest-scoring Czech and also finished seventh in the European Championship, four points ahead of ex-Panther Mads Korneliussen.
He also impressed when he rode in three end-of-season challenge matches for Poole against Eastbourne and Ipswich last October.
Director of Speedway Peter Oakes said: “We are looking to provide our fans with the perfect start to our 40th Anniversary. Our aim is to book in some of the world’s best – and some exciting youngsters who will go on to be very big names in the future. Matej has enormous talent and will be a real contender for this year’s World Under 21 title. Everyone is excited about seeing him in action at the Showground to see how he shapes up.”

Be good to see Matej Kus but can anyone really see Lasse Bjerre scoring anything more than 0,0,0,0 = 0. ? I really don't see how his inclusion will help pull in the punters to help celebrate 40 years of Peterborough Speedway!

CRUMP FOR OPENER
WORLD Champion Jason Crump will headline Peterborough’s seasonal opener.
Crump, who made his Panthers debut as a raw 16-year-old in 1992, has confirmed he will be fit enough to race at the East of England Showground on Monday, March 15 (7.30 pm).
He will link up with title rival Nicki Pedersen in an all-star international select to kick-start the club’s 40th Anniversary season. Showground legend Crump, 34, has finally been given the all clear to start racing again after spending the winter recovering from serious friction burns. The arm injury almost cost him his third world title but he raced through the pain barrier to clinch the title in the final round of last year’s Grand Prix series.
He has not raced competitively since being crowned World Champion and will be making his first competitive appearance of 2010 at his old home track.
Crump was actually the first rider to commit himself to the spectacular opener but Peterborough kept his decision under wraps until he was given medical clearance.
The three-times world number one returned to his Northamptonshire home at the weekend after recuperating in his native Australia.
He revealed: “I said I’d definitely be at Peterborough for the first meeting if I could weeks and weeks ago. At the time I wasn’t sure if I’d be fit enough to start the season with everyone else and we agreed to keep it quiet rather than be seen to pull out. I had some terrific times at Peterborough and won’t ever forget that very first season when I was only 16 and we won practically everything”
“I saw a couple of specialists in Australia and over the last few week things have gone really well. I’ve actually been back on a bike and while I still find it difficult to hold a fork I can ride the bike okay.”
He will ride in the Speedway Riders’ Benevolent Fund charity meeting at Rye House the previous afternoon and then faces the new-look Readypower Panthers in the season’s opener.
Crump is the fourth rider to be unveiled – joining three-times World Champion Nicki Pedersen, Danish teen star Lasse Bjerre and Czech Republic international Matej Kus in the opposing line-up.
Panthers’ Director of Speedway Peter Oakes said: “We can now push ahead with finalising the line-up. We didn’t want to confirm the full squad until we knew whether Jason would have recovered in time. In Jason and Nicki we undoubtedly have the world’s two best riders on show – it’s a mouth-watering way to start our anniversary season.”

Maybe all of them have....just not in one place ! I make it (for the Panthers) Puk, Bjerre, Batch, Bridger, Monberg, Buczowski and Lasse Bjerre. And for the opposition Crump, Nicki P, Kus, KK, Ostergaard and Dryml. I think.....

I believe Lasse Bjerre is riding for the Select side, with Eklof or most likely Jakobson filling the final Panthers slot. I may be wrong on that one though.

PETERBOROUGH: PANTHERS V WORLD SELECT (CH) - PREVIEW SUNDAY MARCH 14, 2010 PETERBOROUGH face their hardest ever match – as they go into their 40th Anniversary campaign. Manager Trevor Swales admits that the hand-picked all-star opposition is almost certainly the strongest team the Readypower Panthers have ever taken on at the East of England Showground. World Champion Jason Crump and his immediate predecessor Nicki Pedersen headline the opposition line-up in a stunning opening to the 2010 season. They are backed up by Poland’s World Cup winning hero Krzysztof Kasprzak, exciting Czech Republic star Matej Kus and former Panthers Ales Dryml and Ulrich Ostergaard. It’s an astonishingly tough opener for the Panthers as they begin their bid for Elite League honours tomorrow night (Monday, March 15, 7.30 pm). Swales, who guided the team to championship glory four years ago, said: “It’s going to be one of the hardest meetings Peterborough has ever faced on track at the Showground, or anywhere else for that matter. “I can’t remember a club ever taking on another team that has both the current and previous World Champion in it. “Between them Jason and Nicki have won six out of the last seven World Championships and that shows they are head and shoulders above any other current rider. “I genuinely believe this year’s title race will be between them so we will almost certainly also be seeing the 2010 World Champion!” Australian international Crump, who began his professional career with Peterborough when he was a 16-year-old teenager in 1992, won his first Grand Prix series in 2004 regained his title in 2006 and made it a hat-trick of victories last year. Pedersen was first crowned world number one in 2003 and then won again in both 2007 and 2008. Ironically even though neither of them are racing regularly in the Elite League this year they both live in Britain – Crump at Raunds, Northamptonshire, and Pedersen in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. Swales added: “The pair of them have more experience than most but it’s up to the new boys to go out and beat them. “I don’t think there’s another club in the Elite League that has provided themselves with such a tough opening meeting – but it’s a great test for everyone. “Every single rider will want to get one over the pair of them and it will be a perfect way to launch our anniversary season.” Peterborough are expecting a bumper crowd for the first meeting of the new era – after a winter of major changes. On the team front only skipper Niels-Kristian Iversen and Grand Prix ace Kenneth Bjerre survive from last year’s under-achieving squad. New signings Troy Batchelor – runner-up in this winter’s Australian Championship – British Under 21 Champion Lewis Bridger and Poland’s Under 21 World Cup gold medallist Krzysztof Buczkowski will all make their club debuts. Back for a one-off return is former Panther Jesper B. Monberg while 16-year-old Lasse Bjerre, younger brother of Kenneth, makes his first competitive British appearance. There have also been big changes off track with a complete refurbishment of the pits area, an upgraded PA system and a stylish new-look match magazine. The Peterborough management and riders also spent all day Saturday promoting the sport with a major display in the city centre Queensgate shopping mall. Opening night teams Peterborough: Troy Batchelor, Kenneth Bjerre, Lasse Bjerre, Lewis Bridger, Krzysztof Buczkowski, Niels-Kristian Iversen and Jesper B. Monberg.
40th Anniversary Select: Jason Crump, Ales Dryml, Linus Eklof, Krzysztof Kasprzak, Matej Kus, Ulrich Ostergaard and Nicki Pedersen.(BSPA)

PETERBOROUGH: MICK’S FINAL LAP
SUNDAY MARCH 14, 2010 MICK Poole will say an emotional goodbye to Peterborough fans.
Poole, who is in Britain for a couple of weeks to help his son Taylor, is the first of a string of Panthers’ legends who will be given a celebratory lap of honour in the club’s 40th Anniversary season.
He will go out onto the East of England Showground circuit for the final time before the opening heat of the first meeting of the season tomorrow night (Monday, March 15, 7.30 pm).
And then he will retire to the pits to watch the new-look Peterborough squad take on an all-star select headed by World Champions Jason Crump and Nicki Pedersen.
It will be an emotion-charged night for Poole and fittingly he will be there the night that Jason Crump returns to Alwalton.
Crump has gone on record saying Poole has been one of the major influences on a career in which he has won three individual world titles.
The pair rode together in an ultra-successful 1992 when Mick was a senior member of the Panthers’ squad and Jason a 16-year-old rookie in his first season of league racing!
Poole, now 43, made his official Peterborough debut on April 26, 1985 against Canterbury when they were still members of the old Second Division.
He also rode for the Panthers in 1988, 1989, 1990 – when he broke his thigh for a second time – 1992 and 1993 in Division Two and was an everpresent in his final season in 1995, when, for the first time, Peterborough raced in the top flight.
He also had brief spells with Oxford, King’s Lynn and Poole but spent the major bulk of his British career at Alwalton, making a total of 217 official appearances, scoring 2,373 points.
Poole suffered a string of major injuries throughout his career but still reached the heights, helping the Panthers win five major trophies, including their first-ever league championship in 1992.
He also rode as a wild card in the 2002 Australian Grand Prix but was forced to quit because of another serious leg injury shortly afterwards.
Mick said: “I would love to go flat out for one last time but I know I can’t because of my leg.
“I’ve never raced since the last crash and I know that I can’t. I was at Press and Practice Day and was itching to have another go but I know it’s something I can’t and mustn’t do.
“It will have to be the slowest lap I’ve ever ridden at the Showground but it’s something I want to do one last time.”
