Just been reading an interview with Rafal Dobrucki where he says riders too often blame their machinery for their own misgivings. www.sportowefakty.pl/zuzel/2010/01/19/rafal-dobrucki/He says if the bikes aren't as good as they'd like the fault lies with the rider for not taking care of it, or setting it up properly. He admits there are differences in the engines, but says it's all down to the set-up for the individual as to whether that works well on track. He finishes up by using Leigh Adams as an example: Leigh doesn't change his bike if he comes third or fourth - he knows that ultimately he's to blame for not making that bike work. I'm sure many riders will disagree with Rafal, but does he have a point? I mean, how many times have we seen someone like Leigh lend a bike he's riding a maximum on to a reserve, who can't handle the set-up and trails in last? Similarly, the reverse happens - riders who are struggling lend their bike to someone else, and they make it fly.

More often than not I'd say that he makes a good point and it's good that a rider says that because paying punters can always have an opinion but they really have no idea how difficult everything is.

Numerous times at BV Jason Crump would romp to victory on his bike, lend it to a team-mate who would trail in last. I guess there is still an element of rider skill involved in the sport.

Does that, in a roundabout kind of way, back up my theory that there is still some rider skill involved and it isn't always about having the best tuned engines? When I said about riders using Crumps bikes and coming last I wasn't just referring to the lesser riders in the Aces teams that Crump's ridden in. Our 2005 team was pretty awesome and at some point in that season every one of that team (Bjerre, Screen, Lyons, Smith, Stead, Harrison) used a Crump bike and came stone last. I remember Lukasz Jankowski using one of JC's bikes in '08 and he just wobbled round for 4 laps. I think he was just so feared of wrecking it he didn't even bother......either that or he was utter garbage. Me thinks the latter!!!

Yes Youngy, I think it does. AJ used the bike in heat 1 and won convincingly, and Ricky went out on it in heat 2 and came 3rd I think.
Can't remember the gate positions or anything else of relevance, but in my opinion, a really good rider will do it on any equipment - although they may have to work a bit harder to make it happen.
A good, well set up bike might help them make the gate, or give them the extra drive to make the front in the first couple of bends, but if they have skill, that will help them come from the back too.
Just my humble opinion of course ;D
