Taken from Speedway Stars' web site;-
Former World Champion Peter Collins has invented a new tyre guard that he believes could all but eliminate the burn injuries that have become so common place in recent years. Citing well-publicised crashes which left the likes of Carl Stonehewer, David Norris, Nicki Pedersen and Jason Crump with serious tyre burns, Collins has launched his new tyre ‘hugger’ this week in the hope that the BSPA and FIM will make its use compulsory for riders in 2010. Read the full story in this week’s Speedway Star.

Collins, the 1976 World Champion, has developed the new safety device after a handful of riders suffered serious burns when getting their arms trapped on rear tyres - including Crump himself while riding for Belle Vue at the end of the season. The invention is to be presented to the BSPA - at this week's annual conference in Bournemouth - and the FIM. Crump told Speedway Star magazine: "You look at something like this, which is going to be an important safety device, and then you look at the situation we have at the moment with exhaust pipes, and you think 'are they going to use common sense and bring it in.' Let's hope so. (From speedwaygp.com/en/newsdetail/a839?SID=b5959ca3782244eb826fa131e88f84d0)
