FRIDAY TEAM NEWS: BUILDBASE BEES v PETERBOROUGH (8pm)
Thursday 03 September 2009
COVENTRY Buildbase Bees will come up against one of the biggest talents in World speedway when the new Midland League gets underway at Brandon on Friday.
Opponents Peterborough are without three of their regular seven riders, and amongst their guest bookings are 17-year-old sensation Darcy Ward, who will line up at reserve.
Ward, who has starred in the Premier League for King's Lynn this season, has already made two successful appearances at Brandon and his presence will undoubtedly help to ensure a competitive evening of racing.
Fellow Australian Troy Batchelor has also been recruited by the Panthers, who are missing the injured Kenneth Hansen and the unavailable Kenneth Bjerre and Ales Dryml.
Bees are forced into one change of their own, as doubling-up reserves Jordan Frampton and Josh Auty are both racing in the Premier League. They call up another teenage talent, Joe Haines - who finished third in the British Under-21 Final earlier this season and celebrates his 18th birthday on the day of the meeting.
The Midland League will be contested between the Buildbase Bees, Peterborough and Wolverhampton on a mini-league basis, with each team therefore having four fixtures.
All three clubs were keen to add the extra matches to their schedules with the Craven Shield competition not taking place this season, and Friday's meeting means the continuity of the campaign is not lost.
The Midland Cup was a successful competition in years gone by when the likes of Cradley Heath and Leicester were operational, and it is hoped that if this year's events are well received it could be extended in 2010.
BUILDBASE BEES: Chris Harris, Rory Schlein, Ben Barker, Edward Kennett, Olly Allen, Joe Haines, Ricky Wells.
PETERBOROUGH: Niels-Kristian Iversen, Claus Vissing, Troy Batchelor, Kenneth Hansen R/R, Mads Korneliussen, Henning Bager, Darcy Ward.
