Oxford's Conference League fixtures are due to get underway with this meeting, and after yesterday's rain-off, this becomes the first meeting at Cowley since our closure.
Complete your weekend - Cardiff on the Saturday and the resurrection of a famous Speedway club on the Sunday.
All the best Rob

Hi Stuart, Thanks - sorry but there's greyhounds on Sunday afternoons until 5.44pm, so there's no alternative regarding the start time. Fortunately, as you say, it is the school holidays soon, and then we switch to Friday nights in around 6-8 weeks time. All the best Rob

I certainly wish everyone success down at Cowley. Incidentally, we'll be leaving the Oxford board exactly where it is, so that young Peasley can keep us abreast of developments and have somewhere on the weird world that he can call his own. That is until Bryn and Chris Brown turn up - then he'll just have to share.

So, the CL side is assuming the Cheetahs name? Indeed - press release come out on Friday and the news is on the Oxford website. Makes sense - if there's only one team at Oxford, then they should be the Cheetahs. All the best Rob

Sunday, July 1, 2007 OXFORD CHEETAHS 67 BUXTON HITMEN 23 (Conference League)
The start of a new era for Oxford Speedway, and this first meeting back - under new promoter Allen Trump - could scarcely have gone better for the Cheetahs.
Unlike the previous week, the weather was kind, and indeed the heavy overnight rain from the previous night meant that track conditions were nigh-on perfect.
The Cheetahs soon exerted their control on proceedings. New No. 1 Lee Smethills won the opening race, with fellow new signing Danny Betson in third place.
Brendan Johnston, only recently 15, won Heat 2, and with Dan Blake in third, it was another 4-2 to Oxford.
The powerful middle pairing of Andrew Bargh and Jordan Frampton took 5-1s from Heats 3 & 5, with a fine win for Sam Martin - passing Jonathon Bethell from behind - sandwiched in between in Heat 4.
After Betson passed Scott James to join Smethills for a 5-1 in Heat 6, the Cheetahs extended their lead to 18 points.
James became Buxton's only heat-winner of the entire meeting in Heat 7, heading home Johnson & Martin. But the Cheetahs responded with three maximum heat wins, with the Hitmen failing to gain any extra points from James's tactical ride in Heat 10.
Heat 11 saw Martin swoop around Bethell after two laps, and Johnson only just failed to overhaul Bethell on the finishing line.
The Cheetahs continued to bang in the points in the final four races - bagging a further two 4-2s and two 5-1s. Martin completed a hat-trick of overtakes on Bethell in Heat 13, while Buxton's Ben Taylor showed some fighting spirit by relieving Johnson of second place in Heat 14.
Smethills completed a faultless 15-point maximum by winning Heat 15. Frampton and Bargh also scored paid maximums, while Martin scored paid 11 and picked up the Rider Of The Night award for his battling displays.
A collection for wheelchair bound Garry Stead raised £342.
In the second half, Kyle Hughes - still very much part of the Oxford squad - set the second fastest time of the evening, completing four laps in 62.24 seconds.
OXFORD CHEETAHS 67 Lee Smethills 15 (5) (FULL MAXIMUM), Danny Betson 8+2 (4), Jordan Frampton 12+3 (5) (PAID MAXIMUM), Andrew Bargh 11+1 (4) (PAID MAXIMUM), Sam Martin 9+2 (4), Brendan Johnson 8 (5), Dan Blake 4+1 (3). Team manager: Peter Oakes.

Sam Martin became the first rider to pick up the Linda De Boise Memorial Trophy, after being chosen as Rider Of The Night for Oxford's 67-23 win over Buxton.
Oxford fan Linda lost a brave fight against cancer last October, and a trophy has been donated in her honour by Jim Blanchard, the Speedway artist.
Sam was selected by Linda's husband Tony and sons Barry and Brian, after scoring paid 11 the hard way - by passing Buxton No. 1 Jonathon Bethell three times from the back.
Tony De Boise said: "I think Linda would have agreed with our choice tonight, as she used to sponsor Sam."
The trophy will continue to be awarded each week, with a different fan being chosen each week by the De Boise family to select and award the trophy.
All the best Rob

Sounds like an absolutely perfect way to start the season, Rob. An excellent result, a collection for Garry Stead and the LDB trophy having been located and awarded. Looks like the new promotion have done you proud, and I'm very pleased for you. Let's hope they carry on in the same way, and that this is a sign of good things to come. Congratulations to all involved in saving Oxford speedway - long may it continue to be a success.

The start of a new era for Oxford Speedway, and this first meeting back - under new promoter Allen Trump - could scarcely have gone better for the Cheetahs. What was the crowd like? Very reasonable given the dodgy weather forecast, some people had yet to return from Cardiff, and that Sunday is not the ideal day (will be great when we get Fridays back in late August). As a complete guestimate, I'd say somewhere in the region of 500-600 - and our second biggest CL crowd ever at Oxford (behind the night we clinched the league title in 2005). Bigger than our final EL meeting against Reading. All the best Rob

One of the better weekends for a long time. The spectacle of Cardiff (well done to Bomber) to the re-birth of Oxford speedway. 2 meetings 2 great events. My respects to all at Oxford for a brilliant track for the young guns to learn their craft. With all the recent rain problems it must have been a task to prepare such a good surface. fog
