Sad news from Germany where it has been confirmed that Sonke Petersen has been left paralysed following a crash in today's Junior SWC meeting at Abensberg: www.sportowefakty.pl/zuzel/2009/06/01/sonke-petersen-sparalizowany/Reports from the track suggested that Petersen, one of the brightest hopes in Germany, had no feeling in his legs immediately after the crash - he was air-lifted to hospital where it was confirmed that he has been paralysed. Dreadful, dreadful news. I am sure we all wish the young fellow well in the future.

Terrible News.
My thoughts go out to him and his family. I wish him all the best for the future.
Mr Petersen - you are a hero and I, for one, give you the utmost respect.

Not the news I wanted to wake up to - awful to hear. I hope he can draw strength from other riders who have been in this position, and go on and live as full and happy a life as possible.

Shocking that at 20 his career is already over.
I wish him the fullest recovery possible both physically and mentally.

I had never heard of this young rider till today.
Very saddened to here the news of his paralysis and I hope he can be strong mentally to get him through what will no doubt be a very dark period.

This news brings home just how dangerous speedway can be.... ...and puts into perspective all the petyy bickering continuing unabated about the rules. Very sad news for the lad. Sincerely hope that as time goes on, the initial prognosis proves to be worst case scenario and he can make some sort of recovery, however minor.

There is a very small glimmer of hope. According to the article I posted on the Ipswich thread, doctors operated on Sonke, and, although the prognosis is bleak, they will be able to re-assess properly in two or three months when the swelling goes down.

Oh no not another serious injury, I would like to send my very best wishes to the young lad, who, like ML, I had never heard of before but I am very sad for him and his family, but hopefully he will have as much strength and support from those close to him as Kim had, and perhaps in time he will find a new direction for his courage and bravery as shown riding speedway.
