ZABIK QUITS PANTHERS Friday 22 May 2009 Peterborough’s sometimes brilliant but problematic Pole has quit the Panthers, citing family problems at home for his reason to leave.
The former World under 21 Champion missed the opening weeks of the season for the same reason and although the club have bent over backwards to help the situation with support and help in this difficult time, they now accept his decision and will now look elsewhere for a suitable replacement.
It’s unfortunate that this has happened just as the Panthers have turned their season around with a decent set of recent results which has seen them soar up to second place in the league standings.
The club have reported Karol’s stance to the sports governing body, the BSPA and have requested a facility to cover until they find a replacement, whilst Karol may well find himself banned from the Elite League as a result of this decision.
Team Manager Trevor Swales said: “I have to say I am disappointed it’s come to this. He was a vital part of the team building over the winter and I think he has the potential of a good career ahead of him. I thought we had overcome the early season problems and he was riding quite well, clearly that isn’t the case but there is life outside of speedway, and my thoughts are with him and his family at this difficult time”.
Owner Rick Frost said: ”Since our last home meeting I have discussed the situation with Karol in Poland and he has decided he will no longer ride for the club this season as this would mean he would be away from his mother, who is seriously ill, for too long. I understand his decision and we are naturally disappointed but wish him and his family a happy outcome to their situation".

Zabik's weirdness is in serious danger of ruining what was a promising career. Even if he isn't subject to a ban of any kind from the Elite League, only the monumentally stupid or clinically insane would sign him. The guy is just too weird; he almost out-weirds His Holiness the Weirdity.

If Zabik walked out on the club again (due to his previous history), the club would not get the usual facility for riders withholding their services. Management did not know this until the BSPA were contacted for a facility in view of his absence this week. Either say it officially or don't say it

Hope the "Eating Dust" film makers are keeping up with all this - its got to be miles better than any fictional story they can come up with Next 3 posts worth a wider audience I feel 17.1.1.1 An EL or PL Team completing 12 applicable fixtures, which must include a minimum of 5 home fixtures will have CMA’s calculated which become effective 7 days after that 12th fixture. In the NL 3 home and 3 away Meetings is the qualification.
17.1.1.2 The rules for a Rider not completing the Teams qualification fixtures are: A Rider who has an established CMA will wait until the next cut-off date (see SR 17.1.1.3), although if no new CMA is achieved by the end of Season, then in the following Season the previous Seasons established CMA will apply. A Rider with an Assessed CMA will be issued with a CMA after completing 12 fixtures (6 in the NL) that will be effective 7 days after that 12th fixture.
17.1.1.3 Thereafter Green Sheets will be calculated on all Meetings up to the 23rd of each month and become effective from 1st of the following month.
On that basis Kenneth, Niels & Mads get 2009 GSA as a result of our 12th fixture at Eastbourne yesterday, which will be effective from the 30th May.
Hansen, Bager and Vissing will get 2009 GSA providing they complete 12 matches by the 23rd June, which will become effective on the 1st July, until that point their 2008 GSA will apply both to team building, facilities and positioning.
Up to 2009 GSA becoming effective (30th May) the team limit for us is 39.90. Once our 2009 GSA become effective that rises to 42.00 but any new rider coming in then is subject to a 2.5% weighting.
With regards to Karol Zabik (who remains on his 2008 GSA of 4.56) It appears that the re declaration in April was subject to a condition imposed by the BSPA MC.
That was, if he walked out on the club again (due to his previous history), the club would not get the usual facility for riders with holding services.
I would add that Mick Bratley, Trevor Swales or myself knew nothing of that condition until we asked the BSPA for a facility in view of his absence this week.
I hope that is clear enough. I'm particularly interested in the last bit of Dick's comment. I know the BSPA are famous for making things up as they go along but I find it very hard to believe that there was nothing provided in writing to Panthers regarding this "imposed condition" regarding Zabik. Surely such important things would be put in writing wouldn't they? How on earth can none of the main people involved in running the club "know nothing of the condition??" Are they saying that the BSPA said absolutely nothing about the condition at the time and then when we asked for the RR facility they turned around and say Oh no, we've just decided you can't do that because of Zabik's previous indiscretions? I don't buy it and Panthers must have known the situation.
It's not going to change much now I know but I just question the transparency of the management team.
Furthermore, with this "condition" in mind, could we have not possibly come to an agreement with Zabik.
Despite Zabik's constant change of tune, would he have possibly been receptive to agreeing to ride another two meetings for us giving us time to get a replacement? I don't know but it would have given him the opportunity to sign off in style and earn some further understanding from the fans. I know his mother is ill and of course family is priority but did we try and talk him into staying a further week? I would like to know just how far the management went to try and at least get a short term extension in place. It's not going to change much now I know but I just question the transparency of the management team. The email confirmation to me of the declaration never included the stipulation. The postal confirmation addressed to me did include the stipulation. Unfortunately, I never received the postal confirmation. I hope that is transparent enough for you.

You couldn't make the bastard up could you!!! How did the head injury presumably sustained in one of his falls in the Polish championship in Torun in July suddenly pop up now, like he didn't know he didn't feel well when he signed on. Panthers have made themselves look really silly here, if they had signed him on an "if fit" basis and made that fact public it might have looked better for them IMO.

Something must have happened.....! Why is nobody telling us anything?? That would have been a few years ago with that PM from Colin Horton saying what do you think about Zabik? I didn't know a lot but it's been an interesting journey which is hopefully now at an end. However, next year there will be Panthers fans putting him in his 2011 side

His Polish team, Gdansk, are now sweating on his fitness for the beginning of their season, as Zabik was going to cover for Thomas H Jonasson while he served his ban implemented by SVEMO. Gdansk have opted not to replace the Pole and have their fingers crossed he'll recover in time to ride for them at the end of April.
