I was posting the records from the 1946 LRC on the history forum today and riding in it as a replacement was Ron Howes of Once a Jolly Swagman fame. I wondered what everyone thought of the film ?

Blimey , i haven't seen that in about 20 years . Good story , Dirk Bogarde i think , but awesome footage of post war speedway . What about those crowds ;D As i said , the last time i watched it was a snowy afternoon around 20 years ago - it was on Channel 4 . Wouldn't mind watching it again after all those years .

Particularly for me as of course it was filmed at New Cross, some fantastic footage of the track and stadium. I have the DVD copy that includes interviews with Ron Howes and Bill Owen, if anyone ever wants to borrow it let me know.

3 Intersting things you should know about OAJSM: 1)Funny thing is, most of the action sequences weren't filmed at New Cross at all, they were filmed at a 'recreated' NC speedway in the car park of Borehamwood film studios 2)The crowd scenes were filmed after a NC v Hammers meeting and the crowd were given 'Cobras' scarves and penants to wave, laughingly enough they weren't told why!!! 3)My dad's in it..... somewhere......about turn 4.......About 10 rows back..... so he tells me every time we've watched it! Pip I find the most fascinating aspect to be 'the message' the film has, attempting to discourage people from taking up the sport, its incredible how popular and dangerous the sport was.
