They met at Monmore Green last night and after an encouraging start for the Pirates, they were left for roadkill by a rampant Wolverhampton team - the Pirates were leading by four points after Ht 4, but after Ht 15 they'd lost by twenty-four points. And tomorrow night it's the return fixture at Wimborne Road. Once a formidable fortress for Matt Ford's team, the Wimborne Road citadel has been crumbling this season, with Eastbourne getting a win and a draw from their visits, while Coventry spanked the Pirates last week. Worrying time for Outraged of Dorset and his chums. They need a good result tomorrow to set them up for their visit to Moscow on Orwell a day later. The good news for Chris Holder is that Tomasz Piszcz will be riding for the Birmingham Brummies and that ought to mean Carl Stonehewer for the Pirates. And it's hard to see Stonehewer managing to get in the mighty Holder's way. I think this could be desperately close and, if the Wolves win the toss, I can see them sneaking a win. The Pirates desperately need Davidsson to get his gating boots on.

What is considered the win of the toss? Gates 1 and 3?
Wouldn't it be more fair with fixed gates?

What is considered the win of the toss? Gates 1 and 3? Wouldn't it be more fair with fixed gates? The gates are fixed, erik, but there are two set options. In the first option, called imaginatively enough "A", the home side has gate positions 1 & 3 in Ht 1 and in the second option - "B" - the away side has 1 & 3 in Ht 1. But the "star" riders usually start their first race in the outside grids and at Poole gate 4 is a dog, so that can often knacker Ht 1 for whichever side loses the toss. Then it all evens out over the first 14 heats, with every rider having every grid position. Then there is another coin toss for the gate positions in Ht 15.

Which is yet another poorly thought out idea by those in charge.

So, it's only heat 1 and 15 that is "coin tossed" or does it impact all the 15 heats who wins it?

So, it's only heat 1 and 15 that is "coin tossed" or does it impact all the 15 heats who wins it? Starting positions are decided for Hts 1-14 by the first coin toss and starting positions for Ht 15 by the second. Hang on, I'll produce the starting grids in my next post.

Thanks Subedei, seems a rather big advantage for the first four heats to win the toss. At most tracks anyway.

Thanks Subedei, seems a rather big advantage for the first four heats to win the toss. At most tracks anyway. The better system was when teams had 1+3 and 2+4 in every other race and it was up to the team to decide which rider was off which gate, it made things far more interesting.

A lot of it can be psychology though, as traditionally the team winning the toss will take 1 and 3. However it does mean later in the meeting that the other team get those gates in the important heat 13. Havvy used to relish taking gates 2 & 4 in his stint at Poole, giving the away team a bit of a start and then hammering them from heat 5 onwards, bellieving you could do bad damage to the away team's morale by coming back at them from which they couldn't recover. And it worked...just look at some of our home meetings from the Havelock era - we'd often be behind after the first few heats, and then wham, the gates changed slightly to our favour and so did the remaining heat results. No-one else has been quite brave enough to attempt it since though - I just liked the sublety of it.

Cant see why the Pirates are favourites for this. I've snapped up 'Wovles' +2
