And now it looks like Russian sensation Emil Sajfutdinov won't be heading for Swindon after all - according to Mateusz at the BSF he won't have the necessary paperwork in place. Sajfutdinov will also miss the Dullard's testimonial at Poole.

The way I read it was that it was questionable whether he'd make it, but having paid an extra fee they got his Visa sorted out in time? That was from the espeedway link I posted earlier about his Polish passport.

Perhaps not? See what you think after it's been put through an online translator:
However, the player has encounteres many of the problems associated with procedural startami in other countries - This was even in the previous season, when Emil was not able to come to one of the league matches. Also this year clerical procedures prevent us from long-planned trip to Britain - explains Tomasz Suskiewicz manager player. Emil had to start in the tournament social events in Swindon and Poole. On the visa even ordered us to wait two weeks and then after the event. In seeking a permit to enter, We carried high costs, and nothing could be done. Fortunately, it is the last such case.

I'm gutted. I was really looking forward to watching Emil ride at Blunsdon and the meeting will be a lot poorer for his absence.
On another note, does Emil (as an example) require a Work Permit to take his place in the British GP?

That is exactly what I have been thinking, Kev. I am gutted after swapping my shift just to see Emil riding on Sunday

I wondered about that, as it says on the Speedway World site that Emil will ride in the GPs as a Russian.

By that time all the paperwork of his Polish citizenship will be sorted out and Sajfutdinov will be in Cardiff. And we should remember he was at Coventry and Rye House in 2007, while he was at Poole early last season.

As a Polish citizen he won't require a "work permit". I doubt he'd need one as a visiting Russian sportsman either, since I would think such things would be handled sensibly by government. However, a work permit would be required if he were to sign for a British team as a Russian citizen.

From the Swindon website:
THE SWINDON management have released the following statement regarding the line up for Sunday's sixteeth anniversary celebration meeting.
Regrettably, recently introduced legislation relating to the issue of visas to non EU workers entering the UK has affected the ability of Troy Batchelor and Emil Sajfutdinov to arrive in time for Sunday’s 60th anniversary meeting.
This issue couldn’t have been foreseen by the Swindon promotion or the riders involved and could have more far reaching consequences for British speedway in general.
Troy Batchelor’s application was submitted to the relevant authority in Australia more than a month ago and on the same day as Chris Holder who has since received his clearance and arrived in the U.K. recently.
Troy has, however, advised us this morning that he has received his clearance and he will arrive in the U.K. over the weekend but, regrettably, not in enough time for him to be able to compete in Sunday’s meeting.
Emil’s situation is a little different, in that he also was expected to surrender his passport for up to 3 weeks while his visa application was considered. However, more importantly he has been advised that he would be required to do this every time he wished to visit the U.K.
Given his ongoing riding commitments he was unable to do this and in order to prevent a repeat of this problem we are led to believe that he has now applied for citizenship in Poland.
In addition to those regrettable withdrawals, Jarek Hampel has also informed us that due to adverse weather conditions in Poland he requires more time to practice before the season commences and is not willing to compete in such a high profile meeting without having had the opportunity to practice beforehand.
2009 Robin Ryan Fisher and last season’s team member James Wright will occupy two of the vacant places and an announcement will be made within the next 24 hours regarding the final position.

Does this Visa issue only apply to the UK, or to Europe? I would guess that it's a Europe wide thing, as we are all governed by the same European employment legislation.

I asked because he was in Italy on the 9th. I guess training doesn't count as it's not paid work?
