Just been reading on the Hammers forum that Jon Cook said the Craven Shield won't be run in 2009. Firstly, is this true, and secondly, we could lose a few more meetings from the calendar, as far as I'm concerned - the ELRC is first on the list.

We could also lose the KO Cup, the Elite League Pairs and the ELRC. I remember reading in the Speedway Star that Matt Ford thought some events should be held as part of a rotation system: the Pairs one year, the ELRC the next year and the British Final the year after that. But the British Final has to be an annual event, it's the others we could lose.

Well as I understand it, we are having a mini league with KL, Rye, Lakeside and us home and away. This will replace the Craven Shield. Not sure when this will take place ie as a season opener or closer or middle yet

The first thing that springs to mind is "why"?
But, as an aside, Lakeside and Ipswich's seasons start against each other with a challenge meeting.

I can confirm that Jon Cook said there will be no Craven Shield this year, at the December fans' forum which I attended.
He also confirmed that Lakeside are hoping to stage the British Under 21 Championship again.

I suspect they will be season "fillers" to ensure that the 23 meetings necessary to fullfill the leasing contract are run. Anyway I think it's a good idea, it gives people an idea of the levels that the EL and PL teams are at.

How is the family of Peter Craven going to feel about this?

How is the family of Peter Craven going to feel about this? Probably relieved that the great name of Peter Craven isn't going to be associated with such a non-event.

I hope they feel that way. Some meeting has to be arranged for the speedway riders who have lost their lives to the great sport that we love though.

Well, I still say that the Craven Shield should be awarded to the winner of the British Grand Prix. That would be a fitting memorial to a great rider.

Well, I still say that the Craven Shield should be awarded to the winner of the British Grand Prix. Is the Craven Shield actually a specific trophy, or just any old piece of silverware they wheel out for the latest mickey mouse competition? I quite like Genghis's idea of awarding it to the team topping the league prior to the 'playoffs'. It's a bit like the 'Minor Premiership' concept in the AFL and NRL.
