I've emailed the Speedway Star and got no response, so I was wondering if any weirdo's can help.
Does anyone know when the Star introduced Track Reviews to their winter issues?

Well, I only go back to 1982 and they were there then.

Surely they go back further than that . I can definitely remember them in the mid to late seventies .

I have a Speedway Star from December 15 1956 and it has a Southampton track review in it, so they obviously go back much further than 1982!

I think the track reviews go right back to the start of the Speedway Star in 1952. I will have a check through - I've got every Star except about 20.
In the early years, they are somewhat inconsistent, e.g. I don't think there's one for every club every winter. And it's only from around 1966 that you get averages calculated in the accepted sense. The stats tend to be more accurate in the period where the Star had a dedicated person to work on them, e.g. Bryan Seery or Dave Welch. Although the stats these days are still 99% accurate and actually no less accurate than the official Green Sheets, which are based on referees' proggies and also contain mistakes.

Thanks to everyone for your help.......far more helpful in fact, than the Speedway Star itself.

Two Speedway Stars are both put together in the course of one week to meet Christmas printing and posting schedules. P.S. Haven't seen your reaction to the Travel Plus Swedish trip in the Swedish section?

Haven't seen your reaction to the Travel Plus Swedish trip in the Swedish section? To be honest, I'm a little disappointed that it's based in Vastervik again Genghis. I would have prefered a different location and to have visited a different EL track, but that's life. The trip to the former GP track at Linkopping and the meeting at Stockholm should be good, and naturally the GP at Malilla should prove to be one of the best in the series again. I'm also dissapointed that there will be no European Tour in 2009 as that really was one of the highlights of my year.

Kev, I'm in two minds whether it's a good thing or not going back to Vastervik. I really like the location, but I've already seen speedway there. I think it's good that there's two different tracks this time for the Wednesday and Thursday meetings. And, as you say, Malilla is likely to produce one of the best GPs of the year - I think it's definitely one of the better GP racetracks, although it would be even better if Ole stayed away. And I think I'll have to take you on and beat you at the Crazy Golf this time. ;D

Genghis was rig....... Genghis was close. ;D Kev - but the Speedway Star was first published at the start of the 1952 season, it wasn't being published during the 1951-1952 winter. So Genghis was right. (Just as he is about the number of matches on the other thread. ;D ;D )
