From www.speedwayworld.tvBILLY Hamill will officially bow out of the sport with a Farewell meeting at Wolverhampton next March. The 1996 World Champion enjoyed a magnificent career which included the notable distinction of riding for all three of the fierce Midlands rivals in the top flight of the British League. Hamill was brought to Cradley Heath by then-Heathens boss Colin Pratt in 1990, staying with the club until their closure after a year racing home matches at Stoke in 1996 - and after a year at Belle Vue, he joined up with Pratt again at Coventry in 1998. He spent six seasons with the Bees, rode for Oxford in 2005 and then finished his career with two years at Wolverhampton in 2006-07 - and Monmore Green will be the venue for his meeting on Sunday, March 22. Wolves chief Chris Van Straaten said: "I think the Cradley aspect has tempted Billy to stage his meeting at Monmore Green. "It wouldn't surprise me to see a strong Heathens emphasis on the meeting, but it must be remembered that Billy became very popular with Wolverhampton supporters during his two seasons with us. "We're pleased to host the event for Billy, and I'd like to think there will be people there who haven't been to speedway for some time who may want to come back for more." Edit: this clashes with the Danish Final.

SNOTTY Nicholls will make a rare British appearance in Billy Hamill’s farewell meeting at Wolverhampton. The Great Britain skipper, who is taking a year out of domestic racing to focus on his Grand Prix programme, has agreed to turn out for the 1996 World Champion on Sunday, March 22. Said Hamill: “Snotty remains one of the most exciting riders to watch and it’s so cool to have him at my meeting.”

Had Billy been smoking something when he said that...? Only a daft yank would describe anything a other than something actually cold as "Cool"

Now let me guess, was he a Leopard once upon a time Good guess. I saw him ride for Cradley Heath in 1991 and then for Ipswich in 2005 and both times he impressed me greatly. He had a great style, much more fluent than Hancock, but injuries took their toll on him.

Wasn't it when Billy was riding for Oxford he had his accident? Just after he'd had a pick-up in form?

Wasn't it when Billy was riding for Oxford he had his accident? Just after he'd had a pick-up in form? Yes, his chain broke and he fell and Jonas Davidsson ran into him, despite having about 5 seconds to lay the bike down. Ruined what possibly could have been a great year for the OSM. As it was, we still won the Craven Shield at the end of the season.

Agreed, I think Penhall predicted early in their careers that Hamill would be World Champ before Hancock but wouldn't last as long, which is pretty much what happened (though he only beat him to the title by a year). I am planning to make this one, with Hamill being one of my favourites and the rumours of a fairly strong Cradley presence in the meeting.

Yes he guested for us, and was excellent. I saw him guest for you at Brandon on the August Bank Holiday Monday. He'd ridden for the OSM in the morning or early afternoon, a meeting that has gone down in infamy for many as a result of the Iversen-Dryml crash - SilverBee, then SilverCheetah, and Matt Davis were foaming at the mouth over it. Anyway, Hamill was unbeaten in his first three rides and then settled for partnering his team mate home for 3-3s in Hts 13 and 15 knowing that was enough for an Ipswich win. He could've challenged the global superstar in Hts 13 and 15; he'd made the gate on him in both heats, but what was the point? Once the global superstar had charged through, Billy H just looked behind, saw his team mate and obviously thought that'll do for me.
