BBC Midlands Sports Personality '07
Vote for your BBC Midlands Sports Personality of the Year. Contenders include Birmingham born Frankie Gavin, the World Amateur Boxing Champion. Take a look at the list below and cast your vote.
The countdown is underway to the big night - the fifth BBC Midlands Sports Awards, being held at the National Motorcycle Museum near Solihull on Sunday 2nd December.
It's the night when the stars come out to honour and celebrate the success of the region's sporting heroes and heroines.
Phil Taylor, Midlands winner 2006
The event, sponsored by Land Rover and University Sport Birmingham, will be compered by BBC Midlands Today's Nick Owen and feature 15 awards, culminating in the announcement of the BBC Midlands Sports Personality of the Year, voted for by the public.
Last year’s winner was the 13 times World Darts Champion Phil “The Power” Taylor from Stoke on Trent.
Previous winners were the Warwickshire and England cricketer Ashley Giles (2005); Paralympic Gold medallist dressage rider Lee Pearson from Staffordshire (2004) and the Women’s World Darts Champion Trina Gulliver from Warwickshire in 2003. So who gets your vote this year?
Frankie Gavin
Those in the running are:
Gareth Barry (Aston Villa and England footballer) – Voted 'Villa Player of the Year' last season and recalled to the England squad following a four year international exile.
Ian Bell (Warwickshire and England cricketer) – Man of the Series in the One Day series between England and India.
Frankie Gavin (World Amateur Boxing Champion) – The 22 year old Birmingham boxer became Great Britain's first ever World Amateur Boxing Champion, when he won the Lightweight title in Chicago. Gavin, from Hall Green Boxing Club, won six fights to take the title, including a semi-final victory over the favourite and 5-times champion from Russia.
His success means he has now automatically qualified for next year's Olympics in Bejing (where he'll now start as favourite for the Gold). Last year he won Gold at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, but decided against turning professional because he wanted to fight for the World title and the Olympics.
Ian Bell
Chris Bomber Harris (Coventry & Great Britain speedway rider) – Chris became the British Speedway Champion for the first time and also became only the third Briton ever to win a speedway Grand Prix.
Kelly Sotherton (Birchfield Harriers & GB heptathlete) - Kelly won the Silver medal in the Pentathlon at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Birmingham, smashing her own Commonwealth and British record in an epic competition that saw her push her great rival, Carlina Kluft, the Olympic and World Champion, close to breaking point.
Against all predictions she won the Bronze medal in the Heptathlon at the World Athletics Championships in Osaka, with a season's-best point tally. She'd been 80-1 to come third before the competition began! Along the way she also achieved a lifetime best in the long jump.
Steve Webster (Warwickshire golfer) - The 32 year old from Atherstone won the second European tour title of his professional career, the Portuguese Masters.
