Yes, I just saw that on the BBC website. I guess it shouldn't be a huge surprise, since F1 is very expensive and the auto industry is in meltdown with most of the major American manufacturers close to bankruptcy.

One suspects though, there is more to this than just that. Honda doesn't just make cars, so should be more insulated against downturns in the automotive industry.

Quite clearly, Honda have pulled out because they couldn't keep up with the pace in F1.

We had a discussion about this at work today. Honda are clearly wanting out because they are looking stupid, which as a company they really shouldn't be. With the price that they have put on the F1 business, we reckoned that we could take on Honda F1 and make a good effort next year. Admittedly Jenson might have to make 1 set of tyres last an entire race, as we couldn't afford the wages of all those guys that run out to service a pit stop....We could handle working the fuel rig ourselves, so that would be OK. Getting to countries like Brazil and Australia could also be a problem. We planned to do most of the races with the F1 cars strapped onto trailers that were hitched to our cars as we drove to the circuits to keep costs down....Not sure how well we would do rowing across to Australia with and F1 car on the boat!!! We were also assuming that the local Honda dealer would cover the cars under the 5 year warranty you get with a new Honda car....we could be screwed if they won't hold up that end of the deal... Still, the offer has been officially made to the current management of the F1 team, and we will see whether we come out as best bidders

Honda are clearly wanting out because they are looking stupid, which as a company they really shouldn't be. Particularly when they have a higher budget and more staff than McClaren and Ferrari, and it's not like they don't have experience in other forms of motor racing.

Actually the top budgets in F1 are: 1. Toyota 2. McLaren 3. Honda 4. Ferrari Although I doubt the above figures include the bungs that Ferrari give to Max Mosley.

Any advance on this story? Has the Honda F1 operation be sold, or is it down and out in Monte Carlo?

The latest was in a story a few days ago, from Planet F1:
Mercedes-Benz's participation in Formula One recently came close to being scrapped in a management board vote, according to reports in Germany.
With the world gripped in an economic crisis, Formula One has already lost one of its manufacturer outfits with Honda announcing their withdrawal from the sport at the end of last season.
The team, though, has been put up for sale and although Honda Racing CEO Nick Fry mentioned at the beginning of January that he had at least 30 prospective buyers, the Honda team has yet to be sold.
Honda's demise has already raised some doubts about F1's other manufacturers with reports in German publication Focus claiming that the management board of Mercedes-Benz recently put their F1 participation up for a vote.
And the results are somewhat worrying with the continuation of their partnership with McLaren only surviving by three votes to two.
However, Mercedes-Benz isn't the only manufacturer whose F1 program is in doubt as the publication also reports that BMW are considering their involvement.
Focus reports that should BMW achieve their goal of winning the F1 World Champion the German outfit may opt out of F1 in the aftermath.

Richard Branson could be about to buy the Honda team: To be honest, I greet the news with a huge yawn. He's linked to just about every failing sports franchise in the Thames Valley region, and it strikes me as nothing more than cheap publicity. Branson does nothing out of love, and I'm amazed that people haven't seen through him by now.

From Planet F1:
Nick Fry and Ross Brawn are the new owners of the former Honda Racing F1 team, according to reports in the British media.
On Thursday a Honda source told the BBC that a "deal is close" but refused to say which of the two parties, Virgin or a Honda management group, were buying the team.
According to The Times, though, the deal has been struck with the Honda management group being led by team boss Ross Brawn and Honda CEO Nick Fry.
The newspaper added that the team will be funded 'by a combination of money from Honda itself for this year, funds from Bernie Ecclestone, the Formula One commercial rights-holder, and commercial sponsorship' while the possibility of Richard Branson's Virgin Group being involved as a backer was 'ruled out by informed sources last night.'
But despite the sale, the team is expected to cut down on the 700 staff member currently working at the factory, although the "majority" of the personnel will keep their jobs.
Earlier reports of the team running a shakedown at Silverstone this week were repeated while, in contrast to the BBC, The Times claims the team's first full test will only take place at Barcelona on March 9th.
Jenson Button will be remaining with the team, however, his team-mate has yet to be decided upon.
