With Hans expectedly giving the Elite a swerve, what will be the repercussions of the missing GP stars ?
The BSF is full of conspiracy theorists suggesting the superstars have struck some sort of agreement to try to force the BSPA's hand to agree to less fixtures and a specific night for all matches, ironically the only night that seems to be even remotely acceptable to all clubs is a Monday, which i would imagine is the one night that would not suit the GP elite.
I just wonder whether the exact reverse is true and its actually the promoters who are trying to force the top riders hand to accept less money.
Here is my thinking, we all know Speedway has been a dying sport for years, and the current financial crisis will make attendances even smaller next season, but will the loss of the GP riders have any effect whatsoever ? I dont think so, it appears all Premier clubs are delighted with their product, and clearly have no desire to step up a division, we even have Wacks and other Reading supporters confirming that life was better in the Premier than the Elite.
So what do we all think, will the loss of the GP stars have an effect ?

It may have an effect on the casual supporter, but are there any of them left? It may also have an effect on Sky's attitude towards the Elite League, but the contract is already signed and Sky really pay a pittance for covering the Elite League.
I don't see the loss of GP stars as being the result of concerted action by either promoters or riders, it's just cause and effect.

For me, I started to lose interest in British speedway a couple of years ago, and looked forward more to the GPs. I'm afraid, personally, the lure of the GPs will now be more persistent in 2009, but I think it also goes back to another thread on here.
Those who support their team will say it doesn't matter to them who rides, but the casual supporters and those who like the individual events will pull further away from the leagues. If, however, I were to watch speedway weekly, I'd be more interested in seeing close, exciting, racing than GP riders, per se.

I have to say for me it's the other way around. With less GP riders competing in Britain, it's the GP series that I'm losing interest in.
The only foreign GP trip I'm planning in 2009 is to Sweden, and the main attraction there is the week of Swedish Speedway, not the GP itself.
As for British Speedway, well the Elite League is a joke, and with 6 out of 9 teams qualifying for the play-offs, I don't see the point in attending EL regular matches in 2009.
But the Premier League and National League are good leagues, and I'll be going along to a fair few of these meetings next year.

Unfortunately I can't really support a team because of shift work so I am not really bothered. All I want to see is good close racing. As Swindon is the only team with a real star, it may put me off watching them or I will visit the ladies when its his race  |

The GP's are boring , usual suspects reaching almost every final raced on slicker and slicker tracks . So i couldn't care less if they all bugger off . Sod 'em .
The loss of them could even have a positive effect on the Elite League , with all the teams being of equal strength giving us better racing .

Well having had a team with no GP stars in, in 2008, and the fiasco of 2007 with Greg Hancock, Mataj Zagar and Nicki Pedersen suffering GiPitus both times they should have turned up at Foxhall, quite frankly it makes no difference to me. I find that the GP's are so boring and predictable now that apart from the fact that I have a "free ticket" and the opportunity to go somewhere I have never travelled before I wouldn't bother. I love my team speedway and that won;'t change because there are few GP riders, in fact we had a pretty successful season without, and none of the participating GP riders made my night's entertainment any better because they were riding. In fact, Hans Andersen came 3 times to Foxhall last season, twice he wasn't racing (for obvious reasons ) he was pratting about doing wheelies and such like, and the 3rd time he came he nearly killed Swidders, so I shan't miss anything there. Jason was always the professional, came did his job, had an excellent interview with Presenter, but didn't enhance BV's performance apart from being top scorer obviously. Freddie and Niels were just the same as normal, not really any better than any of the Witches riders. Bomber obviously rode much better for us than against us TBH, and Scott had a couple of stinkers when riding for Eastie, and AJ hmmmm do you know I can't remember AJ at all  , Ludicrous obviously didn't come to Foxhall, his Sat Nav doesn't go as far as Ipswich . So ultimately what will I be missing?, nothing, and if I want to see the GP riders, well I can watch them in the comfort of my sitting room can't I  |

My understanding is that the free ticket is for "BSI Speedway promoted" GPs and that probably just means Cardiff, Gothenburg and Copenhagen. The rest will be promoted by a third party, usually the resident club. |

Foxhall Heath track specialist, my arse!! It took him 12 rides to amass those points, equating to an average of 7.67........amazing for him, but not too hot in the grand scheme of things. |

Ah, but he had only averaged 4.00 in his two 2000 appearances (he didn't go to Ippo in 2001 - through a geniune injury, before you start ). So taking into an account an improvment of 3.67 per season, I reckon Lukas would be unbeatable around Foxhall by now. Obviously he would beat Swidders by around half a lap and that would upset Badge. So Lukas doesn't go to Foxhall because he cares for Badge's feelings. You see what a nice guy he is now? |
