That's brilliant - thank you both. I don't suppose you know what they were excluded for, or who was first to be excluded do you, please, Oooogers? (Or anyone else?)

Not 100% sure with Bird, I assume unfair riding. Grieves was excluded for not being under power when initial raced stopped.

I know this is a long shot, but does anyone have the time for the race-off between Barry Briggs and Peter Craven in heat 21 of the second round (at Southampton) of the 1963 British Final please? I know I have this information somewhere. If you can give me a little time, I am sure I can come up with this for you.

Cast your collective minds back, the year is 1998 and we're talking the GPs, in particular the final GP at Bydgoszcz. The top eight in the standings would qualify automatically for 1999, but at the end of the days Jason Crump and Billy Hamill were tied for eighth spot with 62 points. A race off would be required. Now, unfortunately, Billy Hamill had crashed out of the meeting in his first ride and was unfit to take his place in the race off. Did the race off still take place? Was Crump obliged to ride around for four laps, or was eighth place awarded to Crump on the grounds he was likely to win the race off?

I'm 99% certain that no run-off was staged, and have a faint recollection that in those days, final placings were decided by the previous years' standings in the case of two riders finishing on equal points.

Even when it came down to a guaranteed place in the next year's circus? I have a faint recollection, which may indeed be wrong, of talk of a race off being required in 1998. Furthermore, the final qualifying place was credited to Crump, whereas Hamill had finished the higher of the two in 1997.

Can anyone help please?. On the BSF, there is a thread for your top 5 riders since the EL began in 1997, and I queried why no-one who had posted their top 5 hadn't included Tomasz Gollob, and someone has asked what his averages were when he rode for Ipswich. It's no good asking me, as I can't remember what I did this afternoon

You can't judge or assess riders like Gollob or his Holiness the Weirdity. It's an insult to greatness.

Pay no attention. Anyone who ranks Scott Nicholls as the all time number one "closely followed by Tony Rickardsson... and Nicki Pedersen" is clearly on the wind-up.

EDIT: Going by EL stats and EL stats alone, I would have thought the top three riders since 1997 are: 1. Crump 2. Adams 3. Rickardsson Going by Elite League performances ONLY. I'm sure KevH could provide stats to prove the above.
