Football, Nfl, Cricket, Rugby, are team sports.
Boxing, F1, Horse racing, are individual sports
Golf, Tennis, Speedway, can be individual or team sports, however Golf and Tennis are without question essentially individual sports, what about Speedway ?
I consider Speedway to be primarily an individual sport.
What does everyone else think ? What is Speedway ?

I'd dispute that golf and tennis are essentially team sports, I'd have said they're essentially individual sports. Speedway is far more a hybrid than either of those two sports. I'd say speedway is primarily a team sport with various individual aspects. The sport begins with the teams and without the teams there wouldn't be a sport.

I have amended my original post, of course Tennis and Golf are individual sports, i'm just a moron. So you think of Speedway as a team sport, interesting, maybe you or Schumi could start a poll.

I think genghis is the poll starter around here. Would there be a sport of speedway without teams?

Would there be Speedway without teams ? maybe not, but who can say for certain ? If a poll is started, and assuming the membership deign to vote, i would expect the vast majority to agree with you, as most are loyal club supporters, nevertheless i have no problem with 'ploughing the lone furrow' and would be very interested in their thoughts.

Of course speedway is essentially a team sport . Individual events are just novelty items in the sport's calender . Golf and Tennis have the Ryder Cup and Davis Cup as their departure from the norm . We have the GP circus and those boring individual meetings as ours . But where speedway is at it's best and most exciting is in the heat of the battle in a team environment .

The bread & butter of speedway is team speedway.
Where would they get the fans for individual events if it wasn't for the supporters from different tracks.
All the best Rob

Speedway is an individual sport in team wrapping paper.
Basically 7 individuals chucked together under a number of place names!

Has to be a team sport, no better sight in speedway than seeing a rider shepherd home his less able teammate whilst fending off the advances of one of the opposition top boys
Various attempts at individual meetings and of course the GP but when all is said and done four blokes going round a flat, oval track for four laps for themselves is unlikely to have people queuing round the block but if there are team loyalities at stake (just look at how people on the BSF still cling to teams that closed decades ago) then all of a sudden the racing is transformed into a more tribal (in a positive sense) contest and something that many of us (particularly those who dont follow other motorsports) can relate to and appreciate
The 'power' of team sports was highlighted during the summer with the olympics where people with only a passing interest in many of the 'individual' sports suddenly became hooked because it was for a 'team' (OK bit of licence required but you get the drift) - classic case of 'more than the sum of its parts'
